    New Tory book says legalising drugs is the way ahead PETER MACMAHON
    RADICAL libertarian ideas – including legalising drug-taking – should be at the heart of policies aimed at reviving the Tories’ electoral fortunes in Scotland, according to a new book endorsed by Annabel Goldie, the party’s leader.
    In one of a series of essays in The Blue Book, edited by Murdo Fraser, the Tories’ deputy leader, Iain Catto, a lawyer and former Tory councillor, argues that politicians ban drug-taking because they are “fearful of being seen as soft on drugs”.

    In the book, published today, Mr Catto argues that Tory policies should be based on individual choice and only permit intervention by the state when there is “overwhelming necessity”.
    He writes: “If an individual is aware of the risks involved in taking drugs – which makes education vital – and if the individual has the capacity to consent, then surely it should be left to the individual to make that choice?”
    Mr Catto adds that if the state criminalises a drug like marijuana because of health fears and stops young people using it “the state is deciding that is knows better than individuals what is right for them, in essence claiming to protect us from a so-called dangerous product.”
    Mr Fraser said he was “relaxed” about Mr Catto’s ideas but they were not official Tory policy. Under Miss Goldie, who welcomes the contribution the book makes to developing policies, the Conservatives have taken a hardline anti-drugs stance.

    this in an old trick the Tories use to try and attract the youth vote…

    there are libertarian types in the tory party who belive freedom of choice should extend to drug use – an amusing [1] example of this is the Freedom to Party movement who were the Young Conservatives’ ravers wing!

    this superficially seems OK but fails even by Conservative standards as people have proven themselves unable to self-regulate (look at the fallout from the early 90s rave scene for instance) and the result is someone else picks up the cost; if it is not the NHS it is the wider society as people become unemployed and often turn to acqusitive crime.

    the reality is no political party could get away with it in wider society and there’s no chance that a conservative party which prides itself on social stability and economic growth would take such a chance – and definitely no chance “Dave the Rave” Cameron would get away with it – I sometimes actually feel sorry for him (and the future of this country!) as I reckon if he did/does get into power the hardline right-wingers will break him and take over

    to do so would involve leaving the UN (who are responsible for most of the anti-drugs legislation because of the USA) and – far more humiliating to Great Britain – the break up or dissolution of the Commonwealth, as the SE Asian countries would definitely protest at this softening of drugs laws.

    [1] it was amusing at least until the older Tories (they were in power then) pretended to listen to them; then slapped them down in Parliament and passed on a lot of info about who was involved to the authorities; so a few people got prison time for drug dealing!

    To be honest i can never see them legalising any drugs its just interesting to see what each side has to say on the matter as it is always something that is in the forefront…

    However as the government are always looking for ways to make more money, if the legalised drugs they would be able to charge tax on them another way to line Gordon Browns Pockets but at least then there would be quality control and there wouldn’t be as many deaths from people taking drugs, as its not usually the actual drug that kills the person more the shite that they get cut with…

    in the long term a legalised, taxed drugs market could work; but it would need the whole EU involved to avoid Britain being brought into civil war by the effects of drug tourism and associated backlashes…

    in the short term there would be a lot of actual upheaval and bloodshed as gangsters previously involved in drugs would turn to other crimes including violent robberies (this is already happening anyway as street prices drop);

    coupled with a recession in the countries where drugs were legalised as the socially conservative corporates based in the USA and Eastern countries withdrew their investment from Britain and Europe as a reprisal.

    then theres the withdrawal or destruction of the international organisations such as the UN and the Commonwealth.

    Come to think of it, this is the sort of situation which leads to war; but there is already war in many countries because the world does not accept the use of drugs and thus military forces are deployed to invade sovereign nations to attempt to destroy drug production areas.

    And TBH people cannot blame the politicians completely; they elected them in the first place.

    Until the average person in the street who does not live an alternative lifestyle tolerates and accepts the recreational use of drugs whether they themselves choose to take them; no progress can be made by anybody (whether in power or not) and the end result is continuedm prolonged and unresolved conflict. Worse than any 9/11 or 7/7, a conflict which destroys humanity from within at the level of individual families and groups.

    the question is, how long is everyone prepared to fight for?

    in the short term there would be a lot of actual upheaval and bloodshed as gangsters previously involved in drugs would turn to other crimes including violent robberies (this is already happening anyway as street prices drop);

    Well then they shoulod be in jail and not selling pharmaceuticals

    then theres the withdrawal or destruction of the international organisations such as the UN and the Commonwealth.

    The UN is founded and rn by the same people who lie/trick/manipulate and wage war and condone torture – Libya is the head of the UNs human rights council – These are not organizations we need to bwe associated with – they certainly wont save you

    THe CIA control the drug trade
