Erin no longer works as a prostitute but she does still take heroin. After 20 years on the drug she has tried every kind of treatment. Now she is part of a select group of drugs users who get their heroin on the NHS.

At a chemist near her flat there are several other addicts there collecting methadone prescriptions.

Erin is getting the real thing. The chemist is expecting her and hands over a bag containing her daily dose of pharmaceutical heroin. She has been doing this every few days, week in, week out, for the last four years.

    The full story is here

At my DDC they’re doing a scheme called R.I.O.T.T which I think stands for Random Injectable Opiate Testing Trial. Basically the clinic have chosen a group of people on a methodone program to be put forward. Some are been given injectable ‘NHS Heroin’ better known as diamorphine, some are given injectable methodone and the others (who are nodoubtably pissed off) are on methodone but its stronger than the usual stuff, well more condensed, for instance if someone was prescribed 100mls a day of the normal stuff on this scheme they would probably get 30mls of this!! This isn’t just for women but men too! I was asking my key worker whether or not it was working, if these people were giving negative samples, and apparently they are! So I mean if this is working then good luck to them, its the hardest thing ever getting off opiates, and if this scheme is making it any easier then I back it 100%!
This is only a trial and therefore if it is successful then I assume that the government will carry this on!

Wish I could have been put forward for it, but as I gave up digging gear 2 years ago, I don’t really think it’d be a good idea to start up again just to get the treatment!!!!:laugh_at:

Oh and these people are get £60 worth of shopping vouchers for doing it!!

    IMHO a good idea,

anything that takes the edge of the chaos is a step in the right direction – as I’ve said in previous posts I strongly believe in harm reduction / mininisation as people wont stop until they are ready so what ever can be done to make it safer is a good idea

I know ‘Tankgirl’ I totally agree with you, its a great idea if it works and it does seem to be doing so.
They even have a ‘shooting gallery’ and if people inject in their arms then one of the nurses will do it for them, anywhere else then they do it thereselves. So its safer too, its not the injecting that ruins peoples veins its what they put in them and so therefore hopefully they will be less problems in that area! Finally the government have come up with a good idea!!
