  • This is the party of Geert Wilders – which made big gains in recent Dutch elections…

Taken from their official election leaflet..

Einde gedoogbeleid: sluiten coffeeshops, krachtige aanpak thuisteelt en drugsoverlast, geen vrije heroïneverstrekking

An end to tolerance; close coffeeshops, take a powerful approach against home cultivation of drugs and drugs nuisances…, no more free heroin prescription for addicts..

    Kraakverbod

    Prohibition of squatting..

noooo not geert! Well that is shit news.

Al draagt een aap een gouden ring, het is en blijft een lelijk ding

even if an ape wears a golden ring, it is still an ugly creature…

bear in mind though the intertwined links between drug use, multiculturalism and tolerance of others lifestyles…

This Dutch news article from 2008 seems to hint that even before Wilders and his party appeared on the scene the elected Government there are are already ending the tolerance of soft drugs. Unfortunately my Dutch skills are not yet good enough to translate that entire article, but skimmimng (and cheating a bit using google translate) it the reporter claims they are using the strategy of “cooking a live frog by slowly turning up the water” i.e increasing the crackdowns slowly each few months.

incidentally the current Dutch coalition government has collapsed because of disagreements over the war in Afghanistan (with the main centre-left party pulling out) – but the political pundits claim that it will result in further gains for the right-wing. Worse still, it was the centre-left party what stopped the other two right wing parties in the coalition tightening up the laws!

In the local elections, Geert Wilders has won a seat in Almere (a sort of “New Town/City” outside Amsterdam, similar concept to Milton Keynes)

Unfortunately although its more a possibility he will remain a fringe politician, the presence of his party now in Power will force Dutch politics further towards the right wing. Just as in England, immigration might not be so easy a target as much of it is essential to a European nation – but the drugs culture might be easier to attack as there is more of a consensus developing against it..

I have a nasty feeling all those really excellent-looking rave events in NL (where you pay only €50 max for 3 day events with all the top names like Armin Van Buuren, Tiësto etc might soon be stopped. Although us British seem to think “anything goes” across the North Sea, the impression I have got is that normal Dutch folk think the drugs/sex counterculture the NL is viewed for is a bit of an embarassment, that the people involved in it are “losers” and they would rather be rid of it..

AVB certainly distances himself from drugs (I always had a feeling he was a very clean living intelligent bloke..)

Beat Factor: Amsterdam is known as a city without restrictions on drugs. You manage the record label there; what’s your position upon drugs?

Armin van Buuren: I don’t do drugs and I never will.
