true but I really can’t believe she is the first teenager to make this mistake in NL but I’ve never seen a report like that in NL before and I’ve been reading their news since about 2009 or so.
It reminded me a lot of what I saw at the Norfolk raves when things got tits up. Also I read on RNW a while back concerns that Dutch kids were abandoning gezelligheid and behaving more like the selfish youths of the USA or UK (sadly some things I have seen on Dutch forums back this up). And yes they do have raves in that area or nearby – OK many are 18 year minimum entry and its hard for kids to blag their way in as there are ID cards in NL but some are age 16 minimum, but posts on partyflock and youtubes I have seen warn of trouble at some events
To be fair the local community including many of the young people and others from neighbouring areas are trying to clean up but thats a fair few euros worth of damage in a town which is about the same size as Stowmarket. They have got together all sorts of resources like a minibus and are even replanting all the flowers, shrubs that got grubbed up or pot plants (its a typically Dutch riot, the riot squad were pelted with pot plants and bicycles!)

unfortunately there is also a lot of feeling in both NL and UK that too much leeway is given to the young people in NL compared to other countries and the govt has just “given in” to them, precisely because they were frightened of them rioting like this so they might have not done themselves a lot of good in the long term – the reason so many big parties (and pills) are tolerated there is normally large groups of young people behave well…
Been reading a few more Dutch news sites. it is being treated as a local major incident similarly to the illegal raves in East England from 2006/2007, which also got similar global coverage. They even mentioned that the mobile phone network crashed due to the amount of people using it!
its a difficult situation for NL as although there was a big rave at the weekend that robbie mentioned he was going to that is most likely for 18+ and some distance away. Dutch youths do not all have cars like in England, the minimum driving age is 18 and the driving test way more difficult even than ours!
NOS Nieuws – Gronings dorp even wereldberoemd
NOS Nieuws – Gewonden bij Facebookfeest Haren
an update : the fallout from this has been massive, apparently €1 000 000 of damage to public and private property was caused in total, which is a lot during a economic recession.
The mayor (from the centre right VVD party) has resigned directly following criticism of his actions when this happened (there was some confusion and rumours that the Council were providing a space in a town square for the party) and that initially youth station 538 at Hilversum (many km away) had thought it was a legal rave and talked it up.
Any jokes about it on Facebook (particularly one about having another festival as “leaving party” for the mayor) are being quickly censored on direct request of the Politie. No debate about free speech – just removed instantly.
I’ve even got a copy of 90 pages long Police/Council report of everything what happened, who was contacted, who was repsonsible, names, places the lot. It is of course all in Dutch as are all the other articles I have been reading and I unfortunately do not have time to translate all this at once (it will be a good exercise over the next few weeks). The report was instantly downloadable from De Volkskrant (Dutch equivalent of the Guardian) as they don’t believe in keeping excessive secrets.
From what I have read so far other than the language it indeed is identical to the similar reports following a rise in illegal raves in the East of England in the mid 2000s.
