  • Although NL has the same gun laws as most european nations and the UK before 1997 (pistols are permitted to licensed holders), gun crime at raves was extremely rare..

the info does hint at “hooligans”, no doubt their confidence has been boosted by NL’s recent shift to the political right.

Man killed in fight at Dutch beach party
    (AP) – 22 hours ago
AMSTERDAM — Prosecutors say one man died and eight people were wounded when brawls and shooting erupted at a Dutch beach party.
Prosecutors say the 19-year-old died at the Sunset Grooves party at Hoek van Holland, near Rotterdam, on Saturday night. The party, which drew 10,000 people, broke up in confusion. Amateur videos posted on web sites record partygoers chanting “Rotterdam hooligans” amid gunfire.
Prosecution spokeswoman Jeichien de Graaff said Sunday the cause of the man’s death and the fighting at the party is now under investigation. She said a number of arrests were made Saturday but it is not clear they are related.
The area has been cordoned off, disrupting nearby traffic.
National prosecutors are leading the investigation because police discharged firearms.

Man killed in fight, shooting at Dutch beach party, 8 wounded

Aug. 23 (Bloomberg) — A teenager was killed and six other people wounded in shooting incidents at a beach party in a Dutch port town last night, police said.
There were multiple brawls during the free party, which started at 6 p.m. in Hoek van Holland near Rotterdam, police said in an e-mailed statement today. From 11:30 p.m. several shootings took place, also involving police officers. A 19-year- old man from Rotterdam died on his way to hospital.
The beach party was visited by 70 to 80 troublemakers, the organizers told news agency ANP. Police deployed their anti- hooligan unit after learning they were planning to attend the event, Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb told Dutch television NOS today.
Organizers said the party attracted 28,000 people, more than the 25,000 visitors allowed according to the police, ANP reported. Visitors to the party, called Sunset Grooves, turned against the officers, throwing bottles, fences and bicycles. Police cleared the beach at 1:30 a.m. after taking three people into custody and don’t rule out more arrests.

I know its not in England but amazed there haven’t been more comments about this..

for one thing its a worrying development in one of the formerly more liberal EU nations, also because its in the EU it impacts on how cops view large gatherings in the UK (this is one of the reasons our nanny state is so harsh on festivals as they expect things like this to happen)

I also find it a worrying coincidence this happens shortly after NL elects far right parties to government….

interesting, ive just got back from NL.

the family we stayed with, i talked with one of them about it (i hadnt read this, they brought it up) apparently police fired shots too, and its not clear whether the casualty and other injuries were inflicted partly by police or not.

    either way, thats pretty shitty.

ah, old topic is ooold. but i gotto add something. from what i heard no one in the crowd actually carried guns, it was the police that started shooting. and the guy who got killed there was actuallly my friend’s cousin. he wasnt even a hooligan or anything, just some kid. this whole mess is not only responsibility of those hooligans but also of law enforcement people who clearly werent able to handle the matter correctly.

I think the cops and everyone else must have got complacent as NL events are usually trouble-free – and because of this had not been properly trained to deal with crowds without discharging firearms.

In England all our public events have to have contingency plans about what will happen if hooligans cause trouble. Even in my town the local beer festival has this plan!

Only specialist UK police carry guns, so armed police are not normally deployed to traditional raves here (they may occasionally turn up when trouble involving guns erupts at urban music events, but more to gather forensic evidence).

Two dance music clubs in my town have been closed due to firearms incidents….

Since the economic crisis every country is in a worse state, it does not matter about which country or race or culture they are from, people especially younger men are angrier and turn to violence and hooligan behaviour which can cause problems with any large gathering of people. Even at the smaller raves in UK I’ve noticed people are much angrier than before – which creates obvious security problems.
