  • I’ve read various articles about this in both English and Dutch; most of which appear to be aimed at existing pro-cycling advocates or University professors (of course there are plenty who are both) but this recent one explains in English how it came about. It wasn’t just a coincidence or because Dutch people are completely different culturally to folk elsewhere in Northern Europe. They have the same amount of space and the same weather as the UK, Denmark and Germany. Although the article does centre around Amsterdam; Groningen (which has even more cyclists!) is mentioned too…

I’d read something recently about the “cycle snake bridge” in Denmark. The impression I’d got was that they had previously built a bridge for cars; then one for people (and bikes?) but the pedestrians complained that they were being knocked down by bikes; and cyclists had to climb up some stairs(?!) with their bikes; so there is now another bridge above the pedestrian bridge which is 4m wide and just for the bikes, and now everyone is happy.

Where I live there is a big road bridge but its become near enough “cars only” (it is a big detour anyway compared to crossing the River Orwell in town on foot, but its congested in town)

I don’t think its officially forbidden to walk across the Orwell Bridge and there are very narrow pavements there but because of its location and less than friendly design very few people do it to the point if any pedestrian is on the bridge too long all the blue light services + Coastguard get called out in case they are planning to jump from there.

Ironically this area (Suffolk / East of England) is better and safer than London or SE England for cycling in; the problem in our country is that British people (or maybe just the English?) have not been been taught since the 1970s how to share public space and resources like European people do.
