NB:I am a IT/telecoms engineer, not a biologist, but have tried to work out what the fuss is..

apparently with some current procedures it does require taking a few cells out of a fertilised 5 day old human embryo – presumably using the same techniques as “test tube babies”. This embryo is presumably then destroyed and disposed of as clinical waste – but it is a collection of cells, not even a human being or any defined species (I think all mamallian embryos are very similar at that stage, any real biologists are welcome to clarify this..)

But for others stem cells can be obtained from various parts of an adult human (I am not sure if you use a dead one or alive one!)

Mr Obama has already said he will try and ensure it isn’t used to clone humans – although I’m unsure why any nation would need to clone humans, it only takes a few seconds to create another one and 9 months to incubate it and humans aren’t exactly endangered…

I’m surprised the Vatican are opposed, I’m a former Catholic and we were told 2008 years ago some woman managed to have a miraculously have a entire baby without any hanky-panky… which is far more outlandish than stem cell research :laugh_at:

if you’re discussing science rather than pleasure its all thats needed though (whether intentional or by accident) – I know 3 couples who’ve recently had these “accidents” (although all of them are now proud parents)

but thats exactly why theres no need for yanks to get paranoid about human cloning – there are plenty of other things to worry about, if the “system” needs a large number of slaves it can and will get them from the existing human population especially in poor areas (after all its where half their military come from) – the scientists have only managed to clone a rather unhealthy sheep and a few domestic pets having spent billons of dollars…

Isn’t that what has happened in at least half of the USA already? “Natural selection” can breed angry warlike people just as easily if not better than any scientific stuff..

Its still a lot more expensive and complicated than other tried, tested and working ways of achieving this such as indoctrination into fighting at a early age (such as child soldiers in other nations), or even the kung-fu school Jackie Chan went to because the Sifu dude bought him off his parents who were young and couldn’t afford to raise him – otherwise the British would have bought him (the price was HK$25) and he would have been sent to a boarding school and become a copper or soldier.

Even today, a live human baby can be purchased for £150-£200 in poorer nations.
