What is the deal with ‘offensive’ jokes? No jokes are offensive really are they, they’re a joke.
Maybe its just my sense of humour as i’m willing to joke about everything rather then be a little bitch about things? e.g Me and my friends will regularly tell ‘racist’ jokes to each other (black, white, asian whatever) and no one takes offense.. because it is a joke and no one actually means it, it is just for fun.
This is why I don’t get the whole thing over rape jokes.. what’s so bad about rape jokes? Why is it okay to joke about some things but not others? Why is rape the only crime we aren’t allowed to joke about? To accept an issue and completely understand it you have to be able to look at it from many angles and ultimately laugh about it.
So to be honest.. call me a cunt, i’m bringing back the jokes cause I used to come on PV every day and be in stitches it was jokes, but now it is much less so. Anyway, the rape train was supposed to stop for no one 😉
I would argue the issue is about the right to cause offence in a free society (to a degree and depending on the circumstance) rather than people being wrong for feeling offended. Can’t tell people how they should feel, well, you can but its rather a right wing path.
I’m not telling anyone how they should feel.. but if they feel that strongly about it theres always the ignore button init

Well you said ” No jokes are offensive really are they” thus you are saying people should not be offended by them thus you are saying/suggesting how people should feel.
I am not having a go or anything like that.
If someone goes to a comedy gig and there are jokes about rape then I would argue they have a right to be offended and a right to leave or stay. But if someone is standing outside an abortion clinic making jokes about dead babies to the people going in and out that would be rather different. So I guess its about the context of the joke as much as anything.
I find it an interesting moral topic the right to cause offence.

It all depends on context, though.
Of course, you have to know your audience and this has to be in context. My main argument about the rape thing was the rape train joke was actually quite tame tbf. It was just a metaphor, I could understand if it was a joke that was like “Oh my god guess what.. that woman just got raped hahahaha!”. But it wasn’t.

I agree 🙂
Think I missed the rape train joke.

was it this one?
i usually am not that bothered about offensive jokes but i think they’re has to be a line, and you should only make these jokes in the presence of people you know annd are comfortable with making these jokes with
you have to consider though that some people might not appreciate it and i think that’s completely fair enough. the rape jokes im not a big fan of because rape isnt really a laughing matter, imagine if your mom got raped and then you had some guy joking about it i’m sure you wouldn’t find it funny then

do you think say someone like Jimmy Carr has a right to make a rape joke even if it causes someone offence?
”But if someone is standing outside an abortion clinic making jokes about dead babies to the people going in and out ”
Dude that made me lol
I think if the joke is tasteful than i don’t care if its ‘racist’ ‘fattist’ ‘feminist’ whatever.

yeah i’d say comedians should be allowed to get away with saying most things really, i just think its a bit bad when people make offensive jokes in public or towards people they don’t know. with a comedian you know what to expect. im struggling to explain myself here lol…

I would agree with you its all about the situation/context. I suppose intent is also relevant, Jimmy Carrs intent is to entertain whereas my abortion clinic example would have the intent to hurt/harm.

Its only fairly recently that serious racism and sexism (to the point a joke was used as a threat to people that if they didn’t accept certain power structures they would get attacked for their race or gender) were removed from British society and that minorities have more rights. Also with a wider age range some of us can remember when it really was not safe to be the wrong colour in the wrong place, and if a girl got assaulted on a night out the feds wouldn’t do shit and they too would judge her and blame her for how she was dressed, who her peer group was etc (nowadays the feds do try harder at least some times but the girls own peer group often still judges her, which is why girls/women are a bit more sensitive about certain jokes relative to sexual assault).
There’s also still a climate of (understandable?) fear amongst young women who participate in nightlife even in safe modern Western cultures, ironically many end up in abusive/controlling relationships because they are scared to go out on their own for fear of harrasment unless a “man can defend them” but at the same time don’t want to miss out on what may be a fun weekend…. many of these women are not silly little girls with a victim mentality but are strong minded…
in recent years there is a push to reverse some of the progressive gains and take back the traditional power a young working class white male had on the streets of England or Europe (especially as other power/recognition has been taken from them by political changes) – in that context jokes are used to enforce this “street power” alongside low level
criminality/harrassment, to get power and control over others. I’m not saying anyone here really thinks this way or does this but there are some lads what do (even on the supposedly “friendly” music scenes) in the real life world outside the Internet….Also in reality people here really don’t know each other that well. OK we like music and some of us take drugs and some of us get together for parties and this place is a genuinely pleasant community but it doesn’t mean its totally one big happy group. Everyone has their own deep set views and prejudices shaped by their personal experiences and we don’t know when/if “banter” could really offend someone at a bad moment (such as a comedown) and permanently wreck what could have been a good friendship.
A lot of jokes come from dark places. they’re all the same to me really….
i mean look at this and then think how dark yet funny it is….. How many police officers does it take to change a lightbulb? None, they just beat the room for being black.
as for rape jokes if they’re funny then fair enough but i don’t bother with them personally really only due to one of my best girl mates got raped in turkey and if she hears them she feels like shit. I do think it’s her own mental issue to get affected by it though.. if a joke is meant to be funny and between mutally understanding people (everyone i know doesn’t condone rape at all…) then rape is a subject which is literally just being used to create a funny moment… funny things are good in life…
