i thought st johns wort was an alternative medicine though?
Therefore surely you must think that any of these are better Photographthesun…
    Citalopram
    Escitalopram
    Fluoxetine
    Paroxetine
    Sertraline

And the doctor will give you a script for any of these, but not for a plant tincture st johns wort.

In clinical trials they have been shown to be more effective; St Johns Wart is quite a mild SSRI and from memory its evidence base is a tad suspect.

    By whom?

By the Giant companies that produce the drugs that are prescribed to us.

how do they suppress these things? what evidence makes you believe this? I am not saying its not true I am just curious.

    Thank you Chrispy.

Photographthesun, I don’t have a problem with you and I respect your opinions, but do you have to be such a passive-agressive wanker?

I don’t respect your opinions (well, not many) nor do I respect the abusive language you have used to attack me a number of times.

sounds like someone needs to grow up and read a few more books before having such strong viewpoints.

I read many books. Right now i’m reading a Vietnam combat diary about the siege of Khe Sanh – “West Dickens Avenue” would reccomend it if anyone is interested 😀

Btw I think your telling porky pies mr, I don’t think i’ve ever hurled abusive language at you (until now.. but you had it coming really). You can’t be passive aggressive and confrontational and then cry about it. It’s wigship all over again.

Depression is generally a long term illness that requires long term medication and things such as fluxetine and the others i mentioned before are going to cause ill health in the long term. Be it physical or mental.
Sticking to herbal remedies would be the best long term decision, and not all but some people might not be able to go off from the pharma drugs after so many years even if they wanted to switch to herbal because of the way their nueros will have completely changed from all the years of artificial destruction…

It depends though really. My mum had depression for a few years after both her parents died in relatively quick succesion (about a year or so apart) plus the stresses of being a mother of three/work etc.. She was on fluoxetine for a while to deal with the symptoms and did CBT at the same time. After about two years she went off the meds and has been much much better ever since. Obvs if you are only taking the medication you are fucked, because depression medications only deal with the symptoms by fiddling with serotonin uptake. But if you deal with the underlying causes, as CBT does, then once you stabilise yourself you can go off the meds.

Agree to disagree and all that because this I fear is getting us nowhere.
