The BBC do read this site fairly thoroughly. They still can’t be seen to be advertising a site which discusses the unrepentant use of drugs and overruling established private property rights as people would complain to Ofcom etc and the producers would get disciplined.
they didn’t exactly back up Grooverider when he got himself caught for a blim and quickly distanced themsleves pointing out he was a freelancer rather than staff.
This is doing my nut in. I know other areas have been involved in bringing down the scene in the past (London gangs taking over, for example, or Exodus burn-out) but the past couple of years it seems to me as though it’s been Norfolk’s turn. They’ve caused major backlash, but also the police have been successful and on-the-ball, and so that’ll give other police forces ideas.
I mean… how can the rigs and certain attendees be so fucking stupid.
Oh well. I had high hopes for the summer TBH. I’m not sure if it will clampdown up North though. The police force is stretched to fuck here. For example: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6079944.stm
The cities up here are full of bare shit, not just isolated areas, pretty much the whole city in places like Hull or Grimsby (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4136342.stm), so the police are all tied up. I reckon a party here in Humberside would go off with hardly a police visit, because they’re all policing Hull, same in Leeds… problem is, I think a lot of the nutters would turn up. I think that’s why Yorkshire parties tend to be more out Sheffield way, or near the Lancashire border.

a lot of this is because it was almost the only bit left in the South with regular parties.
To be fair the backlash also exists in SE and Western England, just that it was confined more to the local media and less of us on this site now live in those regions (or those who do have not wanted to put up “bad news) so they haven’t been publicised on here as much. The locals in those areas are just as angry and supportive of clampdowns though..
Certainly the Forest of Dean came to prominence for being full of ket heads, and there were serious run ins between police, locals and ravers in Bristol in recent times (including various beef with irate locals, might have been the reason why that fire got set at Wentwood last year)

Assuming the nutters didn’t wreck the party (same as in London)
if the cops wanted to stop the event without adversely affecting policing elsewhere they would just use backup from Yorkshire, Lincs, Notts or any other nearby force. Airwave radios and standardised kit/command and control structures make this simple.
And at least one of these “crap” forces is going to get new senior staff when they replace the dead chief constable of Manchester. Those new senior staff are going to want to make a difference. This is what happened in Norfolk..
there are also more coppers than people realise. Another tactic of theirs is to take away units from crimes where our age group is victim as well as perpetrator, and then make a statement to the media about how the rave diverted resources.
They did this in Reading in 2005 when two young girls got murdered by London gangsters – there was a rave during the investigation yet cops still took units off the scenewatch to help stop the rave.
:yakk: Fucking twisted priorities right there!
maybe, but TVP knew what they were doing (to be fair they had already caught the people who were found guilty and eventually got 30+ years sentences) – making use of the publicity machine to turn the heat back on the ravers…
they also knew the girls were themselves into music and had friends who were ravers..
(actually only one girl got murdered, the other survived despite apalling injuries)
none of the normal public complained about the cops priorities either – this was at a time when a popular venue (the Ridgeway) had been constantly overused (two crews got ASBOs for this)
So what can be done to salvage the rave scene, or to prevent it from it’s ever-more-likely fate?
I like the idea of moving more legal and getting a compromise, getting TENS and doing a proper job of it. However, didn’t this happen in France and fucked the scene over? Is it going to be a case of “give an inch, take a mile” with the police (first a TENS, then certain number of officers on site required)?
Or is it to start flyering dodgy Norfolk-style parties explaining to lay low, or… is it a matter of trying to unite and change the public opinion of raves?
Col’s proposal looked promising, but nowt came of it!

AFAIK only the big parties require a large police presence.
smaller ones <500 people often don't have any coppers, but not every region of france allows these small events. France is a very big country though..
Monsieur 665 has managed to find some good parties still in his country.
you can’t expect the police anywhere in the world to overlook blatant drug taking and dealing, as it is illegal due to UN decree (not just one nations rules).
When I first started going to free parties in 1992 people were a bit more discreet as they always thought CID might be lurking somewhere.
I think that unfortunately its a missed chance. too many people my age or younger (mid 20s upwards) are addicts because of overdoing the partying and their families are still picking up the pieces. nearly all the people I went raving with from the 90s have ended up having addiction issues of some sort or another.
Too much bad shit has happened in some areas for wider society to forgive and forget. The best we can hope for is to preserve the legal events that are still allowed to happen, and maybe to get the occasional event with TENS.
the Yarmouth riot happened shortly afterwards. there have also been many more dodgy incidents outside Norfolk as well associated with raves (vandalism, violence against cops) as far apart as the Midlands and Wales.
hello all – been ages since I’ve been on PV (slowly emerging out of the Internet black hole I’ve been in for some time!), but seems like the issues never really change.
Been reading this thread with interest….
I don’t know whether its just something that develops with age (wisdom?!), but this kind of confrontational attitude (with locals/police) gets you nowhere. You have to be considerate to other people’s feelings -whether they share your world view/ interests or not.
Rinsing the same spots over and over is totally pointless and as a number of the posts have pointed out – its just not fair to the rest of the community to bum rush local beauty spots and hijack them for the weekend. Who wants to see a load of fucked up k-heds when you’re out walking with your kids?
But what really got my interest was seeing this forum on the Beeb news. One thing I am sure of – if they are going to scour the Internet looking for a “voice” of rave culture then thank god its PV – still the most balanced and eloquent voice out there!
Nice to see you all still here :bounce_fl
yep, I’ve been off the forum too for a while – my excuse been down in spain helping a mate rennovate a house. having come back from there, this shit is symptomatic of how locked down and draconian this country has become. The image wasn’t clear but looked like there was more coppers bum rushing the scene than party goers there.. Think the news reporter got it right when he said it was ‘a costly operation’. Nothing but I would say..
england is becoming a police state and i’m sick of it.
yep.
how the fuck did we go from having the most vibrant underground culture in the world to becoming a consumerist police state where everything has to be fenced off, under license and under surveillance?
Brought it home to me coming back from Spain. Minute you get off the fucking plane there are montoned voice messages and signs telling you what you can and can’t do…
Time people protested! but they wont.
people have protested, both at the onset of CJA (I was part of the original Advance party lot along with Dan OOOPS) and more recently after the Essex riot 2006.
but no one other than ravers backs them up, a lot less ravers than people think and the ones what have got bored and burned out refuse to support them
unlike other minorities ravers aren’t seen to be making much of a positive contribution to society. OK a fair few of us do have jobs of some sort (and it doesn’t just mean 9-5 work) but this scene is still viewed as leading to addiction and other social problems.
particularly in this region some crews have promised positive stuff and fucked up (ie. Exodus, Kan etc), making both ravers and the rest of society more cynical and less tolerant..
