Hmmm…
About running a minecraft server:
“Benefit of having your own server? Alright ill lay it out for you.
-Before its even up, expect about 100+ hours of mind boggling work.
-Expect to pay a good amount and maybe to have to switch hosts a few times for various reasons.
-Expect to have people screw around with your server and greif like crazy.
-Expect to receive some kind of infraction on your MFC account while advertizing.
-Expect reg quits and having to say “No” tp begging players about 50 times a day.
-Expect pissed off players for some reason or another.
-Expect to not be able to properly use plugins/permissions until you spend hours experimenting.
-Don’t expect to get extra money from donors, you probably won’t even get enough to pay for your server rent.
If you think you have the time and push to go through all of this, and you actually get a nice server up and running with a good active community, and more people joining all the time, kudos. Because trust me, its not easy. I did it, and I would say its worth it. Everyone that joins my server says they LOVE it and I get greeted very warmly anytime I log on 🙂 It makes my day, because God knows, my life other than minecraft and MCF is a shithole.
Thank you Notch and thank you Curse<3 "
Ahaha, So I assume you have to rent dedicated servers and cannot host your own just like that.
Dude sounded pissed.
I’ll give it some thought and get back to you. 🙂
Are you thinking of making a legit server log, or one that you can get on with the free version?

you can get the server from most hosting companies, but that level of resources and bandwidth are not cheap (although the 45 number is players, not CPUs/cores!) and is nearly as much as used for this whole site (both forums + radio stations) and more than VFR EPC3 (my Dutch Airtime server), or the biggest server in use at my work.
100 hours of work to get any kind of server working well in production use is an accurate estimate, irrespective of whether or not it runs open source or proprietary software. About 3 days solid work from when it put in the rack (or provided by the hosting company) to install the software and check for local issues and then more to deal with bugs and problems as and when they happen (often at inconvenient times).
When I thought it was 45 CPUs (or cores, even with a quad core that would be half a big rack unit filled up with servers, which would require 32A 230V power feed (same as a electric cooker in a family house) that gave me a scare, the concept that folk were using that sort of kit just for computer games in the same week a large bit of the public sector in one of the worlds biggest nations (which has the atom bomb) is shut down due to political arguing and lack of money, I genuinely did fear for the future of humanity in a way I had not done since around 1982
