  • this worries me as although I am neither from Pakistan nor Bolton (both are warzones from what I have heard!), its clear its not even religion (everyone involved is Muslim!) or arranged marriages (which happen all the time) but a backlash against “rich incomers”, same as how scallies rob all the high value houses up north… (this is in fact what happened to the other family)

when your own mother has returned to her native country (and is probably seen there as a “rich old auntie”) these breakdowns in society aren’t good at all..

British family shot dead in Pakistan | UK news | guardian.co.uk

“The thing that is particularly concerning is the level of violence in Pakistan and how it is impacting on British Pakistanis,” he said. “Just a few weeks ago a man from Bolton was killed in Pakistan. There is a need perhaps to discuss this on a governmental level to see what support we can give to people who go over there to make sure they are provided with adequate security measures.”

Apparently quite a few Americans recently moved to Islamabad.

Another British Asian businessman killed in Pakistan. BTW the gun laws there are about the same as USA, every angry man who can afford a gun has one!

BBC News – Bury family ‘shocked’ at murder of man shot in Pakistan

since I wrote this my mum has returned to Blighty, she now stays in our old family house in Reading where she feels safer….

    Hi All ,
As much as people slag off the UK and for good reason at times as well . It still is a very safe place to live compared to most of the world …..even the USA . Thankfully i may never have to worry about alot of the every day worries that normal people in other countries have to worry about . Think about it we are lucky

    regards

According to feds (both Pakistan cops and GMP!) the prime suspects are some of his own family, who he suspected of stealing assets from the business and was taking legal action against..

BBC News – ‘Family killed’ Tariq Hafeez in Pakistan, say police

this is what I meant about rich people never being able to properly enjoy their wealth or their lives when others percieve an inequality – bear in mind to those in PK he would have been viewed as like a millionaire businessman..

TBH if this is how folk from ancestral countries treat British Asians they would be better off staying in the UK. Even Bolton is safer these days!

i didn’t ever think that people lashed out against rich people simply for being rich, it doesn’t really happen here does it?
it’s sad when greed ruins people and they do something so horrible to anyone, let alone their own family. i thought pakistan was more of a collectivist culture where family is generally valued more.

It does particularly in cities but to be fair even with todays British society there isn’t quite as much inequality. In the mid 1990s there was a spate of rich people in London being badly mugged/done over and thats why a lot of them have good CCTV and gated buildings etc and pay for close protection (minders).

The whole of Asia from the bits of the old Soviet Union all the way to China is like that with famly values but it works both ways, when families disagree and fight it can get very acrimonious indeed. I’ve even seen it with my extended family, of course its not gone as far as lethal violence but some bits of it don’t talk to one another…
