Just adding something that might not have been pointed out to you – opiates work by mimicking the shape of natural pain killers (endorphins). First stage is like a rocket ship high, like an escape tunnel. Opiates don’t remove the source of discomfort though – which can be physical pain, or psychological pain (“I can’t cope”). Even worse, the nervous system starts to expect a “non” pain level and complains when it can’t detect any opiates.
So, the outside “sources of pleasure” like family, friends, significant others have to contend with an ongoing battle inside the opiate user.
VERY IMPORTANT – what happened IS NOT YOUR FAULT. Even with a user who wants to quit, who receives professional counselling and therapy and methadone, relapse rates are very high – because the nerves are still expecting the endorphin like opiates, and complain like help when the “pain killer” isn’t there.
Personally I tried the stuff and didn’t like the cotton wool feeling of “comfort”. But I have lost friends to heroin, and I sympathise with the pain of your loss.
Comming from an addict of black tar heroin. Its starts off jus gettin high..then its no longer a choice. Withdrawal is hell. You shit you sweat you freeze you vomit you shake your bones & muscles ache you weep…you’re scared…the longer you use the worse it is. You feel ashamed for who you’ve become..asking for help is hard..admitting you’re powerless wen it comes to needing your fix is hard to even admit to yourself…Ive sought help before but my recovery only lasted a yr. Once you’ve used a substance for long enough it becomes a way of coping…heroin makes everything feel like its goin to be okay…wen ur stressed, angry, sad, even happy..Try not to feel like you got cast aside for a drug. Its not easy quitting heroin..or whatever is your fix quitting it becomes nearly impossible. I have no doubt in my mind that your family was infinitely more dear to your lostlove than his addiction. People make mistakes like using drugs but people dont choose to be addicted to a substance. Even folks I kno today tht are sober admit they want to use bein an addict is forever..
