When i said i wasnt going to post on this again, i lied. I had a think about it, and i changed my mind. Its a mans perogative, dont cha know…
I know relatively little about the clearances in Scotland, just bits and pieces really, so i had a quick look at that site. It seems fair enough to suggest that the reality is not well represented by the common perception.
But the site didn’t seem to be that well put together, by todays standards. That is not a criticism, of itself, but i just felt i had to have a quick check on who the website authors were, and how the website is funded.
This wasn’t entirely clear to me, although i could see that it was hosted by a golfing holiday company, which seems a bit odd.
You clearly know more about the subject than I, but i have to ask you, with all due respect, is this really the best site for historical info on the clearances, that you know of?
Just to be clear, I am absolutely not trying to contradict your central points.
The reason I chose that site is mostly the fact that it is a collection of stories (which they ask people to send if they have any more), and history is usually better researched by looking at contemporary sources than it is by taking one scholar or anothers views as fact. And as the site says, they are more concerned with the “who” rather than the “what” or “why”. All of the stories say who their author was, and what they did. These are considered “primary sources” by historians, as they are written by people who were there at the time – much of the literature on the subject is written by people who lived later on, and is coloured by their opinions and views (the primary sources are also coloured by their views, but are contemporary with the events, and so more useful).
There are probably better sites out there, but this seemed a good one to me. I learned most of my personal knowledge about the clearances from books, but did a search on the net, and this seemed the best one to me. Didn’t really look into who funded them etc, as the accounts all contain the name of the person who made them (and you can then find info about them if needed, to weight the value of the accounts). The site owners seem to have no particular axe to grind either (that I could find).
