maybe that’s wednesdays ordeals with the bank storming thing
did nobody even throw a brick or two? 😉
bad boothy, and I expected more from you :laugh_at:
from what I see on the news it was fine,
I guess if it is gonna kick off it’ll be the day / days of action,
I guess for some people it makes them feel as if they are ‘doing something/ making an impact’ and may feel good for a few minutes but….
there are much better ways of making your point IMO
i don’t have enough experience of protesting to be able to decide really, certainly i’ve never seen an effective protest (as in, actually achieved their goal) either at local or national level.
i don’t necesarily think violent protests are a good thing, as they can be counter-productive, but also i think if it was a mass violent-protest it might bat an eyelid or two, something what peaceful protests don’t really do (ok, the PM might say a sentence about it the next day “oh we’ve taken it on board” yeah course you have)
tbh unlike a lotta people i’m gonna be totally honest about this: its the same type thrill that gets anyone, its pointless destruction and counter-productive but to be truthful its fun and an adrenaline rush, for a lot of people the reasons behind the protest is just a justification for their actions (not all though!)
however i don’t think peaceful protests do a great deal, im not saying they’re pointless, because it was headline news all day, 35,000 in london marching etc. it was good to hear as bbc’s first news headline
maybe a medium, as in “stunts” on property (graffiti, barracading, i don’t know) that whilst illegal is a step back from throwin molotov cocktails at riot police till they draft the army in. but these things can go hand in hand if the riot police decide you’re gonna be moved…
I’ve been going to demos since my first one 18 yrs ago,
they may not achieve what they set out to – but it certainly beats sitting at home moaning and taking no action
as Marcus said – not in my name – it makes me feel better that I am standing up for what I believe – being proactive in having my ‘say’, and raising awareness – even if mr and mrs joe public soon forget about it – it does often get them talking atleast for one day
I’m not niaeve in thinking things will always change for the better, or that we will always be listened to – but I just dont see how mindless violence achieve this either –
I’ve been caught up in them before when they’ve kicked off and just missed a batton coming down on my head from a horsed policeman – if it wasnt for my sister pulling me out of the way – (and ended up with hand marks on my arm for a week with the force she pulled me)
I completely agree with the fact it makes you feel you are taking ‘direct action’ or the fact you can get a good buzz and an adrenalin hit – but thats for pure selfish and personal reason IMO,
and often the people who start kicking off can be seen right from the start with their face shielded etc, and often just come to start shit and arnt really that interested in whatever the cause may be – more of an anarchy / anti establishment thing
it may be as I’ve got older I have begun to look at things as a whole – as I’ve like a good old ruck in the past –
but you need to then think of how activists are then viewed as a whole, how it can negativly impact on the cause and the hard work people have put into organising things and the real cost on peoples lives / the NHS, the police etc
and often these people are known, monitored by the police and are often informants to the police also!
sorry babbeling now

i completely agree with this, i’d have been in london today if i wasn’t ill, been in bed the past 2 days, am fairly better now but it was far too late to head down!

i dont think violence is any better at achieving the actual aim but it seems something that can’t just be ignored, a government can ignore people marching, but people smashing up their buildings and threatening their “hold” they can’t not take notice of
it is entirely selfish of course. but a lot of people won’t admit it but i thought i would, i believe in honesty whether it’s a good or bad thing! it has an appeal regardless of the protest itself, an appeal in pure enjoyment
isn’t anarchy/anti-establishment linked with a lot of the protest message anyway? well perhaps not anarchy as this particular protest it seems socialism was on the calling cards, but certainly against the powers that be
when things as a whole are going well for the country, people probably thought activists were hippy idiots whining, or people lookin for a ruck. now it’s all gone to shit, i’d say even violent activists might get a bit of sympathy from a lot of people!

i’ve no doubt the police have infiltrated violent activists… i think what our above powers do know is shitloads more than even the most paranoid expect, to be honest!

they cant ignore it – but whether it achieves its aim – I dunno….

and I’m deffo up for honest open debate – if things like this get people talking it all for the better in my opinion

I believe with working with in / along side the system – getting people together to try and change the system –
what I think I meant was real ‘anti whatever’ you know those who really dot give a fuck about whatever the ’cause’ is and who just wanna have a ruck for their own personal reasons (leave me alon I’m on pint 6 of wrongbow :laugh_at:)

well – even when the ecconomic situation has been better there has been anti criminal justice / anti nazi league / animal rights / human rights / teacher / fire persons / nurses etc demos going on – but maybe just not ‘hit’ the news so much…. but alot of the poeple that attend them are the general public and not what you’d have in mind as ‘ard core activists, but people who really care but prehaps dont shout about it and just get on with it …
i’ve no doubt the police have infiltrated violent activists… i think what our above powers do know is shitloads more than even the most paranoid expect, to be honest!
and even the most paranoid people prob havent got a clue about how involed the police are with monitoring certain people / groups
