Protesters at Tesco site in Bristol evicted
Bailiffs have evicted nine of the 10 squatters occupying the site of a planned Tesco Express in Bristol.
Police said four people had been arrested for public order offences.
One man remained on a flat roof above the former Jesters comedy club in Stokes Croft with his arm encased in a barrel of concrete.
Sabet Choudhury reports.
“last independent high street in britain” :hopeless:
people just need to vote with their feet, if nobody shops at the new tesco it will shut down. if people do shop there obviously there is a demand for it

+1
I’ve got absolutely nothing against squatters making a home out of a disused building or using it for arts/other projects – but if a bunch of christians or Muslims “squatted” a building we had legtiimately bought on the open market to be turned into a community venue because it was going to be “full of vice and drugs” we’d all be up in arms..
also its just squatters spin its the “last independent high street in Britain” – there are loads of such streets across East Anglia, and Tescos has been refused planning on a number of occassions round here.
the comedy club obviously couldn’t pay its way, and I expect second rate comedians have little nutrition value and carry a lot of diseases..
it’s not so much the shop but which shop
tescopoly much?
also i generally dont like huge capitalist chains, i dont agree that they filter the prices down to be more accsesible for the masses, i think a move towards local produce stocked in locally run shops is much more environmental, and i dont think people would have to pay more if this was implemented nationally. it may be a step back to some people, but a positive step back i think, certain people/companies have got too big for their boots

Or people voting with their wallets and a change in society?
Most British Asians are no longer aspiring to own retail premises, they’d rather work in IT or Finance or Telecoms – pay and conditions are better, you don’t get customers calling you Paki bastard and pointing guns or weapons at you quite as much.
Tescos (and other chains) can afford CCTV, rentaguards (albeit by putting up the prices of the food) and keep their businesses running in dodgy areas which is where the bulk of these Tesco Expresses seem to land up in. Its not their fault for all this happening but the scum what go around robbing small businesses (just this week a Sri Lankan dude in my town had several 0.177 air pistol pellets discharged into his face during a robbery)
this already exists to some extent
The Co-operative – good for everyone
the linked (but not identical) East of England Co-Op has managed to fight tesco in the market and win across many parts of East Anglia! I see more co-op stores than Tescos in some villages..
Most regional co-ops sell local produce.. Even they have rentaguards occasionally and were being advised by the Sweeney on how not to get robbed (loads of Londonistan youth coming up here having a go).
