Prime Minister Gordon Brown is planning to give police the power to stop and search people without giving a reason, sources have told the BBC. It comes as Tory leader David Cameron urged greater use of stop and search to combat gun and knife crime.
The two leaders clashed earlier in the Commons with Mr Cameron urging Mr Brown to scrap forms officers must fill in when they stop someone.
Mr Brown said the Flanagan Report on the issue will be published next week.

if police dont have to give a reason or write a stop-search form out that just opens the door for abuse of police powers, uncontrollable predujice (searchin all of a certain stereotype) and generally is a scary thought, we can now be searched without any suspicion!

could hit drug users hard actually, as before there would be no reason to search.

THIS IS FUCKING LUDICRUOUS this country is turning into a dictatorship more and more by the day

This is nothing new, they were doing this when I was 17-18 and a few years before that there was had been a similar rise in violent crime leading to these measures being brought in.

the “reason for search” forms are very recent, they were actually brought in by Blair during the more “optimistic/lenient” days in the late 1990s, as well as the cops not being so bothered about small time drug use.

even so in the 80s/90s you just were a bit more careful about stashing drugs, avoiding town centres where there was lots of cops, not wandering round the streets blatantly fucked and drawing attention to yourself etc…

it does show how for all our technology etc we have gone backwards socially…

I have only ever been stopped and serched once, and to be fir i’d only gone shop for some milk said i fitted the discription of someone they were on the look out for girl in jeans and a hoodie i think thats like half of the girls that lived where i lived then, i don’t think that it is right that they should be alloewed to search anyone with out suspision.

iv been stoped and search countless times and im white. for dickall they make up reasons anyway, “the dog indicated to us that you had somthing on you” THEN WHY DIDNT U FIND ANYTHING U LIEING FUCKING NAZI? the dog didnt do shit the dog did the same thing ti did to everyone else who didnt get searched FUCK THIS SHIT. this is ridiculous the police already think there incharge of our lives and now there having it made law

I think its more an age thing (irrespective of ethnicity), when I was 18-20 and living in SE London (not too far away from where JonnyQuest is now) I used to get stopped all the time

I often work late and cycle through mid-Suffolk villages and Ipswich at all sorts of rum hours of the night, and never get any hassle – cops sometimes look at me and my bike (probably to make sure I’m not out burgling peoples farms etc..) but never actually stop me

incidentally when they started logging the ethnicity of people being searched (around the mid 90s), if I got searched my description would miraculously change from “IC5” (Asian/Oriental) to “IC1” white when my details were radioed through – despite a cop shining a torch at me and being clearly able to see my skin colour… :you_crazy

ok yeah age does play a big part in getting searched, but i still want to be able to find out what exactly it is about me that makes me suspicious

had our van serched the other day but we was loading it with scrap metal…

they are already doing this in sheffield city centre.

i realise that police dont give a reason for searching (well, they make up one on the form) but at least the form is some kind of check if it needs chasing up, not much to stop them i know (suspicion of drug possesion, looks like suspect etc. etc. reasons are easy to make up)

but the proposal is to remove forms altogether, so the cops no longer have to worry about coverin their backs one bit. they can just search anyone with no reason and not keep record of who they search.

I once went to a demo in town all masked up….but I filled my pockets with old cheese and lobster soup we had skipped. The stuff was seriously minging.

So when I was detained for refusing to remove my mask and they searched me I had nothing but pockets of minging fishy soup and rank cheese. Was great as they had nothing to do me for as I had no warrants.

one time a cop took my bong off me and put it in the pockets of his wax jacket. the water all spilled out and made him smell like bong water. i still got nicked, but at least i got a chuckle out of it
