  • Saw on one of the media news sites that club channel Rapture TV is to be re-launched soon (having changed ownership and run out of cash a few times IIRC) – albeit sharing an EPG on SkyDigital (industry-speak for a digital channel position)

They (understandably) concentrate on commercial events – and IIRC it was just the standard shots of stomping people, munted interviews with DJs and clubbers (which from experience is all the material you are likely to get videoing clubs!) with a few music videos, however it is good I suppose to see at least one UK-based dance music TV channel.

Might also be of interest to the East Anglian massive as they may know people who work or have worked there, IIRC Rapture used to be based at Anglia in Norwich (nearly went for a job there once!)

    I don’t even have sky though….

Yes, I never saw it on sky but it started on Channel 4. Used to see the presenters around Norwich quite a bit. Plus used to recognise a lot of the dancing goons they had in the studio and the guest dj’s.

sorry – can’t help thinking of Alan Partridge with a bit more “street cred”…

Mind you here in Reading there was a cable channel called Thames Valley TeleVision (capitalisation deliberate, the old fart who owned it was using the same branding and production values of the 1960s 😀 ) which attempted to put on two “youth” shows “hypersonic” and “clubbers breakfast”.

I helped out at the start but my views, ideas and thoughts that a youth programme did not need constant micro-management from 60 year olds (who could not even work their own edit suite but refused to admit to it!) were seen as way “too anarchic” for the station so I left and went back to raving.

Some friends of mine carried on working with this station and although there were some good ideas the end result was often perfectly awful. I may still have some videotapes of it somewhere…

I reckon though there is an outlet for a proper underground dance channel a bit like a pirate station in its presentation; of course we could not blatantly put on illegal party footage or the old bill and ofcom would rinse us and everyone who appeared on screen; but stuff like computer graphic animations, art installations, VJ-type things would be OK – as would documentary stuff on news, technology and social issues.

There is so much talent out there, its way easier to make decent multimedia productions when every PC sold today can edit broadcast quality DV footage – somewhere along the line all that talent and creativity is getting stifled by Britains moribund media “industry” – when it could be the only thing that could save it..

No need to apologise. That’s an accurate description.

It was quite funny to watch though as they were blatantly off their nut whilst presenting. Mandibles bending all over the place as they talked.

yep; I remember noticing this on few the occasions I watched Rapture 🙂 That’s one advantage of radio I realised; the listeners do not see this … (on some transmisssions of Reading 107/VFR Radio in 1997-9 I was perhaps less than sober 🙂 )

Fair play to them I say, the actual salary paid to rapture presenters was fairly pants (would have been a pay cut had I joined them)-and most of these jobs short term and never guaranteed to lead to a real career anyway – why not make the most of it I suppose?

curiously despite being shy in normal social situations I don’t have a problem with “performing” like DJ’ing, announcing on radio or being in front of a camera (at least at legal venues!) – although I would never consider myself to be a “brash/big ego” type; and am thoroughly put off by the “selling your soul” act you have to do to get into the business nowadays (bottrop on SJ recently said a lot of true stuff about the TV industry!)

Actually I once did put together a video showreel – it was well received but at least one person said I looked a bit shifty in it at some points – supposed I’d better get used to this 😀
