maybe he was (and his mate), and they also had been gifted a quantity of mushrooms “for later”? this was about the time the British music industry were tyring to do the same with uk hardcore that NL did with hardstyle and trance, to get it both mainstream and underground at the same time with a strong appeal to teenagers and youths.
to do this involves having a cleaner cut image distanced from drugs a bit, and not looking blatantly out of your head when faced with thousands of 15 year old kids wanting autographs. often there are reporters from the mainstream press as well.
Think about how two bemushroomed chaps, one of them a promiment MC would plan to escape a rave, without having to abandon the stash of mushrooms. if these were kept in a less discreet container even if legal they could still be grassed up to the press, but a flightcase would be overlooked as more likely to contain microphones or other audio kit.
Indeed it was bang on that time in history. They had kinda just abandoned the dying sound of happy hardcore and out of nowhere had managed to all produce tons of new tracks with the new eurotrance style sound. In the UK I remember it being called the “hardcore mutation” and also “Nu energy/freeform hardcore” had broken out the hardcore box into its own style I quite liked the new sound and still do like some tracks bt still could get a bit lame from tune to tune.
And maybe your right about ribbz doing a runner for the masses looking for autographs. LOL I bet when he heard me shout his name I bet he though “aww fuck” maybe thats what they were laughing at the fact that they had come close to being caught by the ravers. Never thought but that. Well done GL : )
