ello, so, have u ever heard sum1 say thet u shud “open up ur mind to religion”? i have, nd it pisses me off tht, even though they tell u to open ur mind, if u try to talk to them about an idea tht disagrees with there religion, even a tiny bit, they will dismiss it and act like its bullshit, so is religion reli opein ur mind or is it just closin it to other ideas?
…i know, im deep. :laugh_at:
A lot depends on the followers. Not all religious people are like that.
In my last job one of the lads I got on best with was a very devout Muslim; proper beard, always at mosque on Fridays – a lot of people would be intimidated by this dude because of recent events and stereotypes even though he is one of the most friendly and peaceful chaps I have met..
I would discuss my lifestyle of raves/alcohol/drugs openly with him and at no point did he ever try to discourage me from following my own path or convert me to Islam or even criticise me for my lifestyle – whilst I have had conversion attempts before from both Christian and Islamic preachers and my own family encouraging me to return to my former Roman Catholic faith.
Where religion may have a positive effect is where it encourages self discipline and positive collective behaviour amongst groups of people (it can easily fit in with pro-ecological type behaviour, hence a lot of religious people crop up in the Green movement). But many people could easily get this by themselves without having to believe in supernatural beings…
There’s a massive difference between people following religion to genuinely create a positive environment for themselves and families and preachers trying to change others lifestyles without even the legitimacy of conventional political/social structures (which for all their faults usually come from laws voted in by some sort of consensus)
if u were being open minded to religion you’d have to study them all and accept that one could possibly be true

as far as i can work out through research, religeon was initialy ment as a guidline to live your life by to make it better for you and the people around you .. it’s only when some one see’s that there is a big group of “easy going” people that some one then thinks .. this will be easy to controll and take power of .. then that is when you get the crazy ass religeon that is hell bent on power and money that you mostly see every where today
what I do see happening (and I appreciate its verging on “conspiracy theory” stuff) in Britain today is that the religious types of all faiths/racial groups and the conservative minded politicians and the local “business community” are definitely trying to create a “multicultural middle England” as a extension of the Protestant work ethic.
I think the stuff like muslim extremists and BNP etc is a smokescreen ; both will be stamped on eventually and replaced by a centre-right government similar to thatcho in the 1980s, with less civil liberties and clampdowns on things like nightlife, but acceptance of both the “free market/business” and increased govt support being given to all faith-based groups.
They want youths of all races and cultures to work hard in school and jobs, not question authority and attend a “moderate” faith based youth group – it doesn’t matter which faith as long as they have one, but stuff like drugs/booze/parties are viewed as “sinful”.
The worrying thing is it seems their strategy is working. In my region (which has always had a strong Christian contingent) more and more youths are going back to religion, and the preachers are picking up lots of “lost sheep” what have “strayed” due to drugs/booze etc… and “Eastern” religions are increasingly used in moderate forms to keep British Asian youths “back in line” and “respecting their familes/religion/culture”
what better way of getting people in line than “outlawing” most things people find fun .. and then offering a way to make these “antisocial” kids better them selves than offering them “socialy exceptable” religeion where they will be made to feel like they are doing the right thing for once.

^This.
I am pretty strongly atheist myself, being a scientist probably contributes to that, it just doesn’t seem logical to me.
That said, I have no problem with religious people at all, provided they are of the above sort. Indeed, people fitting that description, religious but unassuming and not pushy about it, tend to be some of the hardest working, and most pleasant people around. They also tend to be the kind of people you can talk about religion with comfortably, share your views and let them share theirs, and despite not sharing beliefs, come to some common ground with.
However, the minority (at least I assume and hope it is the minority) of religious people who are excessively loudspoken, refuse to accept people not of their religions point of view, and are generally obnoxious, really do earn a bad name for religious people on the whole.
It’s just unfortunate that the religious people we really notice because they stand out are that minority – it’s a shame.
this is the exact reson you had to wear school uniform in school … it’s setting you up for future life working in an office wearing a suit … other than that senario i cannot see anywhere that wearing them kinda clothes would be considered normal …. also almost all schools have religious conatations … wether you belive in them or not you have to take part unless your RELIGEON sais you dont … (if you don’t have a religeion your views on this matter are nul and void .. you just dont have say!)
To be fair, some sort of school “uniform” isn’t necessarily all bad – it prevents a lot of potential bullying, but equally the ridiculous school uniform forced upon many kids is all about disciplining them to be “model members of soceity” as you say. Much better to have a minimal dress code. Then again there are plenty of arguements the other way to do with comfort etc.
I also agree that it was stupid to force non-religious kids to take part in the religious parts of school and allow people of other faiths not to, although that is probably not so bad these days.

hm yeah i agree, though school uniform is helpful occasioanlly for example on school trips if 1 gets lost its easier to find em, but it is bloody uncomfortable wear, and expensive too :/
religious conatations YES 😐 having to sing shite about god loves us and we love god in primary school
wtf, that shouldnt be allowed.. most kids dont know better than to take part either and then it embeds itself in their mind =| luckily i knew better >=P
ive got no problem with religion until its in my face or its telling me im gunna sizzle in hell, and they dont even supply chips to go with me.
they try and force it upon you at school, but ill never ever ever ever participate even if im punished.. religion is the cause of too much unrest
it’s punishable by an eturnaty damed to hell
I guess if you have fixed idea’s based on no evidence it would be hard to argue you are open minded, but i guess it depends what you mean by open minded exactly (or indeed religion).
hmm yeah or does the box even exisit?
anyone get the feeling we should all be lieing half trashed in the sun, perhaps on top of a hill, passing round a bottle of ooooo lets say whiskey. Perhaps the odd spliff too.
