    Local News Oxfordshire wrote:

Hundreds of Christians, Jews and Muslims joined together in Oxford for a walk promoting peace. It was the fourth friendship walk held in the city and started at the Oxford Jewish Centre, in Richmond Road.

The group walked on to the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, High Street, and finished at the Central Oxford Mosque in Manzil Way. The Rev Charlotte Bannister-Parker, a curate at the University Church, was one of the founders of the walk, which began in 2003 on the eve of the transfer of power in Iraq.

She said: “Because it was so successful we have had it every year since.
“Each year it has grown and each year the commitment has been unbelievable and our patrons now include the Bishop of Dorchester, Rabbi Norman Solomon and the Imam from the Central Mosque.

“The essence is to show people that we can live together in our communities and pray for peace and honour each other’s differences.”

Prayers were held at each location and refreshments were served at the mosque.

Thats good… it’s nice to see religions accepting each other…. raaa

Makes a change as usually you only hear how they conflict..

      That’s a really good idea..

I think most people will agree that we should be able to live together in peace

no matter what religion we believe in ?

They’ve been doing stuff like this in Reading for years – It does get reported in the local news but not very widely.

TBH SE England is still very multicultural but its taken for granted somewhat, and is also because its still a relatively prosperous area, so the middle classes of every religion do try to unite people. Most of the racial/religious conflict in Britain is because of economic reasons IMO, people see one group doing “better” than others and become jealous…

I used to work with one of the blokes who organised such things, and then moved to another company and found that his sister-in-law worked there!

They are Muslims, but are always happy to integrate with everyone. One of the Sikh ladies at my work would always let their kids stay round at their house and socialise with their children, which is one of the ultimate gestures of trust….

I’m not knocking anyone who has religious beliefs, I have my own type of faith but I do have a huge problem with the cluster f**ks perpetrated in the name of organised religions, of all kinds.

So seeing this sort of thing is nice and here’s to much much more

hope it becomes more widespread then just a few, maybe it could help a great deal with ending wars especially in poorer countries like iraq. good to see a start though 😉

I’d like to see this sort of march in East Anglia too, but based more around younger people integrating and uniting whatever their colour/ancestry instead of religion (I’m not religious but I am British Asian – this means I’m proud of my ancestry but also of the unique culture of Britain)..

Round here I think theres a slightly more racial tension than when I lived in London and SE England, although its better in Suffolk than the other counties) – this increased tension IMO is an issue which needs to be addressed…

I think its not so much religion which is the main problem but the ruthlessness of the jobs market

in some areas there are lots of people competing for less jobs and young people see these jobs going to ethnic minorities because the new entrants either accept slightly lower wage rates, or (more commonly) because they are prepared to do overtime and weekends…

in other areas some people find they can’t get jobs because of prejudices, and then they are at risk of being introduced to the criminal gangs and extremist “religious” groups…

but its the big bosses, business owners and politicians who are exploiting immigrant / ethnic minority workers worldwide, they don’t come here for fun (my parents certainly didn’t!), people need to realise this rather than fight one another…

I think that it is a good thing personly that some awnsers of creation go unsolved, since I havent got an awnser for everything.

It seems an unfortunate aspect of human nature to try to understand everything.

Sadly many things which humans have come to understand in so called technological advancies, are the same things which are destroying the world, like Nuclear Energy, Genetic Enginearing, Radiowaves, and now evan space is clutterd with junk too!

this is worth reading in the context of this thread, a good story of people overcoming prejudices especially in the wake of current events..

I just hope that Gorden Brown enjoyed his walk round the depleated uranium munitions of hot and sunny Iraq on his way to meet the Iraq Goverment.
