As part of my Experimental Psychology (MSc) course at the University of Sussex, I am conducting a research experiment on the influence of drug use and self-reported psychopathy on the recognition of facial expressions of emotion.
I am looking for participants who are aged 18 or over to complete an online survey that will take approximately 20 minutes.
The aim of the study is to see how self-reported psychopathy and different levels of drug use affect the ability to recognise facial expressions of emotion. Ideally, I am looking to recruit participants who regularly use cocaine, as well as those who rarely use, or never use cocaine.
All individual responses are strictly confidential and the survey can be completed anonymously, you will also have the opportunity to enter into a prize draw to win £25!!!
If you are interested in taking part in this study, the link to participate is below:

Thank you in advance, I hope you find it interesting!
While I use/ have used many different compounds, I never liked cocaine. I like the idea of your study but when you have 2 variables, drug use and the uniqueness of every person as dar as their personality traits go, how do you expect to account for one or the other being more dominant?
Without doing double blind tests when people are actually using cocaine or are made to take the test at set intervals after a know amount of cocaine was given to each individual, I don’t see how your results will really be worth thast much……
Thank you for your feedback, I have kept the description pretty vague and perhaps that was a mistake (I don’t think details should lead to demand characteristics, but was being on the safe side). I’m actually focussing on self-reported psychopathy, but have included other questionnaires to assess traits associated with this.
Previous research has suggested that a deficit in fear recognition is present in psychopathy (both clinical and self-reported), and also in regular cocaine use (used more than once a month). To the best of my knowledge, no study has directly compared the deficits seen in psychopathy to those seen in regular cocaine use, or investigated the combination of the two factors. This is the aim of my study.
I appreciate your point that a double blind experiment when people are actually using cocaine would be ideal, but unfortunately due to time constraints, lack of funding etc. this is not possible for me for this particular course/ project.
I am also in need of controls who do not use cocaine but use other drugs, if you are interested? 🙂
Thank you again for your feedback.
Hey thanks very much for that excellent reply and I can totally understand and accept why doing serious testing just is not possible (am guessing you have neither millions of pounds nor several years just to get approval/licensed/etc., then the cost of pharm grade cocaine on top) but sounds like you’ve taken reasonable steps to compensate.
My understanding of psychopathy is woefully inadequate to say much here without looking into it a bit more (they lack empathy is about the sum total of my knowledge here) but cocaine users can certainly become twats with regular use so doesn’t seem so unreasonable to closely compare them like this and I’m already very interested in seeing the results.
I’ll happily be a control but am gonna find out exactly what criteria defines a psychopath lol cos my head is already full of interesting questions.
One quick one, is it thought that having psychopathic traits is due to abnormal brain development or maybe some chemical imbalance? If the latter then maybe cocaine could, when used in excess cause similar tendencies in people which is sort of similar to how MDMA loses the magic after many uses of the drug and even after years of abstinence from the compound it never comes back…..
I believe that one MRI study of found decreased grey matter volume in areas of the brain that are associated with empathising and responding to fear (psychopathy vs controls), although I haven’t looked at this in very much detail as of yet. I don’t know if this has been observed in cocaine users though, I am looking forward to researching and finding out though! I was inspired by a clinical study that compared emotion recognition deficits in people diagnosed with Schizophrenia to those observed in alcohol dependence. Both conditions were associated with emotion deficits, but when they were combined (people diagnosed with schizophrenia who were also alcohol dependent) the deficit was reduced. I’m wondering if something similar may happen with psychopathy and cocaine use. Maybe, like you said, it could indicate some imbalance that is corrected by cocaine use.
As well as psychopathy, cocaine use is specifically associated with reductions in the recognition of negative emotions. I haven’t actually used cocaine myself, but friends of mine have and report that they feel more confident while using it. Perhaps this has something to do with being less able to pick up on negative emotional cues, although this is just my speculation. I am actually really looking forward to researching this!
I would be more than happy to report back here with results, either on a new thread or via a direct message.
