Obviously everyone knows about Ritalin and it’s treatment for ADHD and similar disorders, but I have people at University saying it is good to pop if you need to really concentrate on some revision/coursework/exam etc. As a student myself, I was wondering if anyone had tried this or knows anyone who has, or just has any thoughts on this and if it is worth trying to get hold of some……Shouldn’t be too hard :weee:
I did Ritalin (methylphenidate) in 1992 and it was like slightly weaker speed (not bad). I think it is class B, so getting busted with it means at least a Caution and possiblly being sent down from uni (depending on the rules). it is apparently only approved for UK use for those who are below age 18…
Modafinil is more expensive but only POM – and better if you want to improve your study skills rather than have a good time. Too much stimulation can end up with you easily distracted, particularly if you are already bored with uni…
I knew it was a bit like speed but I never thought of anyone using it as a recreational drug.
I suppose that makes sense about getting distracted, you would have to really want to be concentrating on your studies for it to have a useful effect.
I’m in no way bored with uni, quite the opposite it is the best decision I have made and find the course extremely interesting. I’m just not afraid to try a chemical or two, and if it can help me get a better grade them I’m all for that. Will research your suggestion……..
I heard it actually contains cocaine
My ADHD friend hasnt taken any in years.
He usually tokes the ganga alot too, so naturally hes a tad unstable.
the best way to get through revision/coursework/exams is to err.. actually listen in lectures, concentrate and knuckle down when you need to and learn your shit. just a tip. i think if you haven’t got the motivation to do that in the first place than a drug isn’t going to give it to you.

It contains methylphenidate which does have some effects similar to cocaine… I remember reading somewhere that grown adults in some areas were trading mobile phone credit vouchers with youngsters in return for the drug.

Believe me I do listen, I’m not paying 3K a year for nothing.Just wondering if people had ever tried it before and if it worked for them. Plus, drugs have an effect on any brain, so even if Karl Jung or Einstein were to take some Ritalin they might concentrate on a subject a little deeper, and I’m certainly not doubting their motivation.

what i dont get is how the fuck someone came up with the idea of giving ritalin, which you say is a slightly weaker speed….to people diagnosed with a condition that, basically makes them hyper in the 1st place (my gfs daughter has it)……i would have thought it would make them worse than they already are

I believe it is because ADD is basically a lack of ability to concentrate and thus often expresses itself as hyperactivity. Ritalin helps this concentration ability and thus can reduce hyperactivity.

Theres a big moral debate about using drugs to improve learning. They really can make significant differences in a verity of ways.
A lot of people use Ritalin type products to improve their studys, especially in the USA. I would go for it but dont over do it or become reliant etc. Good for keeping focus all evening but not good for daily or perhaps even weekly use.

i dont doubt your wrong, but from my xp with speed its does the opposite, it makes me fidgety and cant concentrate on a single thing….something which ADHD sufferers experience on a daily basis….i wouldnt have thought it woudl work, but must do as they are prescribed it

well speed wont have quite the safe effects profile and I would guess its quite a low dose in comparison to an RC dose of speed but I do see what you mean it seems almost paradoxical.
not really paradoxicle … it’s like you say … lower doses … if you take a little speed you’ll be alert and on the ball … you take a bit more you’ll get figity and your concentraition will start lacking.
Same with coffee (or any/most stimulents) .. you have a cup .. you’re alert and on the ball .. you have 10 … you’re a nevous wreck!
blah?
i agree with the above
