  • I ride my bike everywhere. Just now i was in some stationary traffic on the way back from work when a lady in a veichle behind me shouts out ‘oi mate can you get out the way’. I asked why and she just said i was in her way. She then proceeds to tell me she ‘pays her taxes’ and pointed to her car tax. So i tell her that by riding my bike im not producing any pollution etc and there is no bike tax!

Anyway as the nice guy i am i decided to let her pass after a minutes worth of arguing with a huge smile on my face so she doesnt know im pissed off but fucking hell what was her problem ? The traffic wasnt even moving.

I was in traffic cycling past a school at 3:30pm so cycling on the pavement was obviously out of the question. But on the other hand ive had abuse hurled at me for cycling on the pavement. You just cant win!

Ive never had a car driver to tell me to get off the road because i dont pay taxes before. In retrospect i should have just cycled really slowly to piss her off but at the time i was more confused by her.

GL, your a fellow (push) biker do you get this sorta shit ever ?

I’ve had work colleagues mutter about “taxes”, but thankfully not too many problems on the road.

However I am Asian and normally wear sports/street wear (i.e I look like a young Asian chav); I get the impression from the looks on their faces that motorists hate me just as much but are too frightened to challenge me in case I may be a crackhead with weapons/terrorist or whatever the current stereotype is.

I also usually have a pannier bag on my bike – for a week after 7/7 drivers were actually stopping and letting me pass!

As for taxes, there are two serious misconceptions a lot of people have. (I work in public sector finance and have had these facts confirmed by senior staff at the Department for Transport).

The first is that vehicle excise duty pays solely for roads. It does not and has not done so since the 1930s….

VED is put in the general taxation pot with all other taxes and the money is doled out by HM Treasury for whatever purposes the country needs.

The actual money raised from taxes on motoring including fuel taxation does not go anywhere near compensating for the other costs caused by cars such as pollution, wear to road surfaces from large vehicles, clearing up after road traffic collissions or dealing with extra risks to society caused by storing such items as petrochemicals in bulk to meet demand for fuel (something citizens round your area have learnt to their cost recently!)

The other misconception is that cyclists somehow “evade taxes”. They do pay tax which contributes to transport infrastructure – they pay VAT on bicycles, spare parts and accessories, and their Council Taxes which also contribute to infrastructure….

Exactly, i was totally miffed when she pointed to her tax badge and started trying to imply i didnt pay taxes and had no rights on the road. Totally unexpected and a bit random. If more people cycled, the roads would be less clogged up and she would probably face less traffic.

hehehe 🙂 I might get one paint ‘BOMB’ in big letters on it and throw it in the car windows of cars that hastle me. Ive also had the idea of mounting the loudest air horn i can find on the front of my bike. The faces of people who cut me up or nearly run me over when i sound that thing should be a laugh. It would also cause other motorists to look round and notice their lack of consideration for cyclists.

    what a moody cow

luckily the majority of drivers in town around here do give enough room to cyclists… friends who’ve moved down from SE england can’t get over it :surprised

during rush hour bikes go faster than the traffic anyway 😛

there used to be a bloke who rode the wrong way past queues of traffic at rush hour slapping ‘driving tickets’ on the windscreens of cars with just one passenger with a list of reasons to cycle or use public transport… stuff about pollution, costs and a paragraph that said something like “are you fed up with sitting in traffic jams every day? well it’s your fault. get on yer bike!”. he wore a gas mask which I though was a nice touch

I used to travel in and out of London for college during rush hour and why anybody would go through the hassel of taking their car is beyond me. I’m sure the conjestion is just as bad in any other major city too.

I’m a motorbike rider and we suffer somewhat similar abuse (although ‘they’ can’t tell me about taxes). I think there’s a few reasons for this. Firstly as a nation we are more stressed as a whole, and not much stresses us more when we’re stuck in a traffic jam late for an appointment of some kind (especially if you’re unfortunate to have 2 screaming kids in the back).

I’ve noticed when car drivers (though not all) have some road ahead of them they treat it like a race track because, after being stuck in a jam for the last 10 minutes, they want to make sure they get as far as humanely possible before hitting the next inevitable jam. So when someone like me comes across their pass the shit hits the fan.

And finally, let’s face it, jealousy. Car drivers tend to be pissed of that cyclists and bikers are able to filter their way through the traffic and disapear off into the sunset. So when a little steam needs to be let off we become a prime target. To which I reply by tearing off their wing mirror as I ride past. See you in hell suckers!

I used to cycle in steel toe caps, and gave a good passing dent to any car that had given me grief (car doors are expenisve to replace and difficult to repair). I dont get so defensive now when I get grief on my bike. Although no one has mentioned tax before.
A mate of mine was knocked of his bike last year by someone clipping him while overtaking him on a narrow bridge. They didn’t stop so see if he was ok, but they had to stop at a traffic cue on the end of the bridge. He reached in their open window took the keys from the ignition and thew them in the river. The traffic was pretty bad for the rest of the morning.
    Happy peddlin

Nice one! Leaving a long think scratch along the car with your keys as you go past is a favorite too. Not that I have ever done it 😉
