  • this might seem like a really strange thread even by my standards, but my tech blog is intended for anyone in the world.

I am going to explain why I needed to get a 1970s era radio antenna working for listening to the community radio station, then realised not everyone in the world has a roof space like in England (which is often unconverted and contains all manner of random pipes/cables)

Many countries only have single level houses, or flat roofs (which often pets live on or people sit on in good weather), others in multiple level buildings do not need to have individual radio/TV antennas as the building owners provide a distributed one – or their roof spaces are nicely converted into living / storage / hobby areas. so what is up in your roof?

We’ve got a defunct watertank and enough junk to solo run an entire carboot sale! There’s alot of empty boxes too that belong to the electrical gear that’s been bought over the years. That’s about it i think.

We did have a wasp’s nest up there a few years ago too, but I got rid of that (nearly breaking my leg in the process lol). I fucking hate wasps.

Any wasp or filth fly is normally killed on sight if seen in my house as I am allergic to wasp stings and filth flies spread many diseases so they are both a threat to life – thankfully in the UK we don’t that many kinds and they are only usually found in hotter months. Other bugs are caught in a plastic box and released alive (after being photographed if they are anything interesting).

I did have a pair of blackbirds in the roof space and ended up with both the female and male in the house due to leaving the loft hatch open to inspect some water tanks. I am not sure how they got in and where the hole is, as I would stop it up to avoid heat escaping but there is also the dilemma of denying the birds what must be a particularly good nesting place (as cats rarely get into an unconverted loft or scale really high roofs) – there was a great din above my room every morning during summer, way more than just two birds could create- but I can’t either find any evidence of the nest so maybe that was outside the house after all…

maybe thats why there are less pitched roofs and lofts in hot countries, as all sorts of creatures could get in there including snakes, spiders and lizards…

yeah the only things I kill are wasps and moskitos, everything else stays here. I even have about 50 odd ladybirds hybernating at the bottom of my stairs just inside my front door :laugh_at: I’ll have to take a picture at some point in the near future.

I have a fly infestation in my house atm – came back the other day and there were literally 50 big blowflies buzzing around the kitchen. It’s been going on for a couple of weeks now, reckon it’s the kebab shop downstairs. Sad thing is I’m on a comedown and will still be popping in for a battered sausage + chips in a bit.
