  • The man has a very good point – we might whinge about licenses and safety rules here in Britain but there haven’t been fatal nightclub fires in the UK for decades…

Russian PM Vladimir Putin has hit out at local officials for failing to enforce safety rules at a nightclub where scores of people died in a fire.

Visiting the site early on Tuesday, Mr Putin added a bouquet of roses to the assortment of flowers, candles and victims’ photos outside the club.
“I simply do not understand how fireworks can be used indoors, when it is written, clearly and in Russian, ‘Do not use indoors,'” he said.
“Such an attitude can be qualified as negligence, at least.”

wasnt there some nightclub that went on fire and collapsed just a few years back??

yes, crasher one in Sheffield. But the Fire Brigade did a good job, it was either empty or evacuated at the time and no one was hurt or killed. I’d have to start delving into historical sources for more details but from memory the last fatal fire I can remember in a entertainment venue in the UK was in the 1980s…

The fireworks point is a valid one but he neglects to mention there was only one entrance/exit. So assuming that fires can start in a number of ways and are not that uncommon the lack of a health and safety policy/enforcement is just as damming. Its country’s like Russia that make me love England again.

to be fair I’ve not seen Gordon Brown counting fire exits either…

the bigger issue is the health and safety enforcement of the USSR/Russia was traditionally carried out by the Комитет государственной безопасности, (Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti) – where (безопасности = against danger) – but of course these guys have other more sinister connotations, so in “modern” Russia there isn’t as much of constructive working with Civil Service authorities as in England.

Nightclub owners the world over have to be watched closely that they do not deliberately block or secure fire exits to prevent people gaining free entry into venues at the expense of peoples safety..
