I seem to recall a documentary a couple of years ago (a Mark Thomas one I think) that did an expose on the Sally Army in the UK and they are just as bad as the Americans when it comes to things like that. There was a woman on the show who was Nigerian and went to the sally army for help / accommodation and they were willing to help her until they discovered she was a lesbian and then they suddenly changed their tune and started trying to make her repent of her ‘sin’. They’re a fucking disgusting bunch who hide behind adverts that make it look like they’re the only ones who give a fuck at Christmas time. Bollocks to ’em!
they only won’t say their real views because of our laws and quietly hide their hate. at the same time if you have brown skin and call your faith group offshoot anything with “army” in it that usually earns a visit from anti terrorist feds.

Oh wait it is them, well shit I had no idea. ( a friend of the families received quite a lot of help from them a few years back.)
I thought they paid more attention to jesus’ teachings as apposed to the old testament teachings. Frankly sir I am shocked and appalled.
to be fair faith groups are good at helping the “lost sheep”. the condition though is that it must get back in the herd. (This is actually openly stated in various forms (with much reference to ovine species) in the bible and the Koran).

I am sure they do a lot of good work to but as with most faiths literal interpretations of their texts seem somewhat repulsive.
Aye. You can’t take it literally though. Not just for ethical reasons but the timelines clash and there are contradictions.
Oh well I won’t get into a whole religious discussion on the forum for fear of monotony.
… the trouble with doing good deeds to appease an almighty supervisory thingy and some dodgy old books, rather than doing things simply and genuinely
I think anyone who’s against homosexuality needs a good bumming from a gay person (lesbians can don a strap-on for female protestors). If they don’t like it then fair enough you can justify your dislike of the gay community but until you’ve been sodomized and didn’t enjoy it shut the fuck up!

I managed to divert the Jehovas witnesses this time (they were trying to knock my door just as I was leaving on my bike) by saying that I was on an emergency mission to the radio station as they were off air due to power cut and if I didn’t get there the African brother wouldn’t be able to record his gospel show.
The first bit was true (UKPN had put half of town off supply and there was a surge that had caused some problems in the night) although it was Saturday morning and the gospel show is actually live on Sunday, not recorded. it kept everyone happy anyway..

Absolutely bang on the money mate, well said.
Speaking as somebody who has benefitted from the charitable activities of the Sally Ann… don’t tar them all with the same brush.
They’ve given me quite a secure place to stay when nobody else would. And fed me. Actually the did charge me for doing so but on a credit basis (and a helluva lot of people who they do help don’t give them a bean back).
Thing is, in helping the poor, it’s very easy for those workers to become cynical and twisted from the people they help. Lot of twisted bitter people, doesn’t half lead to a very depressed regime.
I’m talking more about the individual halls that help to house homeless people, and I’ll just give one example… the manager of the Sally Ann (Leger Des Heils actually, in Amsterdam) was absolutely looking forward to the end of the world, could not see any hope, just saw people as endlessly destroying themselves, and was quite frankly a miserable bastard.
He still helped me. OK, he was chuffed as fuck when I fell flat back down to rock bottom after moving out, but he did help, and so did a Hall in the UK.
Now, gays are a thorny issue for the Sally Ann. Legally speaking, they can’t exclude gay homeless people (in countries where this is illegal discrimination) BUT…
… that doesn’t mean all Sally Ann staff have to like gay people. Generally speaking it’s expressed as anti-sympathy rather than hate, but it’s not like there’s a hidden programme to take in all gay people and quietly murder them “because that’s what the Bible says”.
Different SA Halls have different staff and regimes, and it’s always easy to criticise and carp about the people on the front line trying to fight poverty and despair.
Fuck it, they’re on the front line. If they can’t complain or express opinions or just get annoyed, how do you expect them to deal with the pressures of trying to help?
Bitching is the easy route, just do your bit for the people around you. It’s very easy to point the finger, and sometimes criticism is helpful, but please don’t write off the whole organisation because every single one of them is a fallible human being.
They done good to me and they’re doing good to other people. That gets up some peoples’ noses. What really matters isn’t the words, it’s the actions and intent behind them.

but that isn’t too abnormal an attitude for many Northern European folk anyway whether or not they are in that sort of work. I think also there is the big difference between European and USA culture.
as for the Dutch lot
Zijn opdracht is het Evangelie van Jezus Christus te prediken en in Zijn naam menselijk nood te lenigen zonder enige vorm van discriminatie.
at least they are 100% honest but also caution against discrimination..

It’s an attitude that is tolerated when it should not be. In a sense, it’s the very attitude that William Booth set up the Salvation Army to combat in a non-violent way.
