  • Holla people, I’m currently at uni doing graphic design in sheffield and Im doing a project on the free party/rave and underground dance music scene. Im in process of documenting it through photographs, interviews, generally gaining peoples historys and memories of it. This is from where it started, original sound systems, parties, clubs.

Im wondering if anyone would be interested in contributing towards it, from talking about it in interviews or even writing a little history of it themselves, to getting involved and being photographed. Im especially wanting to photograph the sound systems, people involved, the parties. Its gonna be like a documentary basically, going on the lines of photographers such as Larry Clark, Mark Asnin, etc, etc. Im also wanting to show the people and character behind the parties, how they got there, the moments before people start arriving, to afterwards, just the whole scene basically.

If people want to right reviews on club nights in Sheffield, or parties, even DJs at the moment and records. I thought it might be nice to do some profiles on DJs and such, basically anything free party related.

If you wanna get involved and live in Sheffield drop me a message or email me at:

people will be very wary of this mate. your basicaly going to be doing the cops work for them. and im pretty sure no one is gonna to want to admit or go on record about being activly involved in any sound systems in sheff that are still going. :you_crazy:

Fair play, not sure what good can come of it tho.

The good which will come of it is helping this guy out with his uni work.

thelocos, I can see you want help but it is quite a sensitive subject to openly discuss for obvious reasons.

If SP says he’s safe, he most probably is and if I could help I would… thelocos, have you ever been to any free parties? May if you told people about your own experiences they might trust you a little bit more?

people who are still activly involved in illigal activity cause that is what it is viewed as regardles of whether you think thats right or not would be stupid to say anything to anyone tho. esp if its going to be published. i doubt it will just be people at the uni that see it, im sure the finished work will end up on the net somewhere. as good as your intentions, what ever info you get could easily be held against people if the police did want to make an issue of it. Also making a documentary going on about the sheff/northern scene, could easily draw unwanted attention from the public as well. You can hide peoples ID’s/number plates/rig names etc, but its still gonna be drawing attention to the scene. Also even if you dont show any downsides and just show it through rose tinted specs, people can always look for the negative even if you dont show it.

Might be a good idea for a project hypothetically, but a bad idea from every other angle IMO.:hopeless:

Point taken… maybe it is a bit of a dodgy idea for the OP to do a project on something so hush-hush. I expect he’s trying to do something ‘on the edge’/’controversial’. There are other things, like drugs in general for example, which are not particularly hidden yet still edgy?

rite, i think everyones got way to paranoid and overread this completely wrong. it isnt just about the free party scene, its more about the underground scene and the people involved. im not wanting to do somethin that is gonna be proof to convict anyone, or owt like that.

im wanting to get people memories, ideas, reviews, etc on the whole scene, doesnt mean you have to say any sound systems name, or even discuess locations or anything. it doest even have to be about free parties, theres plenty of legal nights goin off around sheff that im sure are well above legal requirments. im wantin clubbers historys on events like insomniacz, headcharge, etc. just like a documentary of the sheffield scene.

the photographs im thinkin people have jumped into paranoia mode totally over, im not wantin to photography people dealin drugs, or takin em, or anythin like that, even people who are directly involved in puttin free parties on at free parties, just them in their natural enviorments, like them as people, maybe even like fashion shots or whatever. just showin the scene how it is, and what surrounds it.

and yeh i have been to free parties, ive been going to em for a fair few years now so i know what peoples worries and such are about. i know what could happen if it all got put it wrong hands, but theres nothing that substantial that could get people into that much trouble.

like i said if anyone wants to get involved then email me or somethin, you can contribute to any level you want.

and yeh ben i know its you, if you wanna get involved get in touch, could sort out a photoshoooot or sumert, write some stuff, etc.

…im not tryin to do owt edgy, i could think of a million more edgy and controversial things to be doin at uni, im wantin to do it cause i have a keen interest in it.

cool mate, dont seem to be that much going on in sheff at the mo apart from free partys tho. and now its winter, not much of that either. i like sheff, but compared to Birmingham/manchester its dead for decent club nights recently… :hopeless:

yeh tis true, ive not been up manchester or birmingham but theres some mad nights up there, leeds is quite good tho, there plenty of good hard house nights on and that 😀

its nots just a lack of nights, lack of decent venues as well. Theres gotta be about 20+ alternative venues in brum all doing different things every weekend hip hop/house/breaks/dnb/techno/dance/reggae. your lucky in sheff if you get two nights on at the same time. more like 1 decent one a month if your lucky. :hopeless:

Thats good, try coming to hull!
There’s about 1 a year and the same amount of free parties:laugh_at:
