This looks truly nasty. Brazil is a bit of a crazy place but this is just organised torture.
Disgraceful but can’t say it surprises me at all.
Just last week (or possibly the week before) over 200 people died in a Brazilian nightclub after the performer set off fireworks from the stage causing a blaze to tear through the building. Whether or not these fireworks had been permitted or snook in I’m not sure.
Wonder if it was Nightclub’s nightclub?
The Brazilian prison system is a mess. Kids who get sent to juvenile detention facilities end up becoming complete psychotic people with no regard for human life (good film about one such person is Bus 174, made by the same guy who directed Elite Squad.) The conditions are abysmal and then whenever they get out they just end up becoming repeat offenders because they’re desensitised to violence.

both these incidents are what you get in cultures of “free market having ultimate power and minimal regulation” taken to extremes – there are times when robust regulation, surveillance and enforcement is needed especially when you have large, male dominated crowds in a competitive environment who can and do erupt into violence. When it comes to security, prisons and nightclubs aren’t that dissimilar (you have a lot of people crowded into one small space) even if folk choose to be in one and usually try to avoid the other.
The nightclub incident was made worse because firstly the band members discharged cheaper outdoor fireworks in a indoor venue, then to make things worse the soundproofing used unsuitable materials which fuelled the blaze.
We might moan about the UK’s “health and safety” culture but it does prevent things like this whereas more “tolerant” countries seem to be plagued by such fires especially when economic times get bad and corners are cut.

to be fair it appears that he has he sorted himself out and is applying for the uni he wanted to get to (it just happens that I was lurking on a popular youth/student site to find info on motoring and also both learning and teaching (for the community radio station), and he cropped up there!
