FTR Heroin is EASY & CHEAP to make!! The reason why it’s worth a lot is due to illegality and how far it’s travelled, buy smack in asia you’ll pay sweet FA. Also Poppies are easy and quick to grow so also easy to produce Opium. When it comes to full synthetics like Methadone the cost is ridiculously less (lab made, no Opium in it). Heroin (Diamorphine) is semi-synthetic and Morphine is fully natural (it occurs in the poppies and all Opiates convert into Morphine in the body).

if it was available and legal and of reliable quality, then that would reduce/eliminate illegal trade, wouldn’t it?
No because unless the heroin is produced in this country, which it isn’t. As Pat said the vast majority comes from Afghanistan and surrounding countries and they aren’t going to give to us for free. So either you basically legalize heroin and the materials needed to produce it, never going to happen, or you continue shipping it in from the country of origin thus keeping the trade alive.

british troops are already there… ‘operation – bag the poppy?’
Well… maybe the reason they are there is that, if they get killed, then they can be stuffed with heroin and imported without border controls.
I do not know if this happens, but I cannot exclude the possibility.
I just don’t see the point in giving someone stuff they’re addicted to for free unless there’s a strict control in terms of dosage and they are weened off it over a period if time.
Not to mention that programmes like that already exist for people who aren’t responding well to methadone treatment, so it’s a moot point. I don’t believe giving people what they’re addicted to unreservedly will solve the problem. It’ll just cost the taxpayer and society. I am all for people having the choice to do what they want with their bodies, but making choices also means accepting responsibility for those choices and not leaving everyone else with the bill for your mistakes.
