This is untrue – Mainland Northern Europe was quicker to spot the abuse epidemics from the 1970s/80s onwards in such places as faith groups and the entertainment/music industry and their police services quicker to believe child and teenage victims of these crimes; the worst of the people involved were nicked in the 1980s to 1990s onwards; sent to prison and are still there. The UK and Southern Europe appears to be a decade behind although online culture is making everything impossible to hide (which isn’t a bad thing).
As few people want to hear “bad news” anywhere in Europe, privacy rules about crime news are stronger and the rest of EU is always judged by the Anglosphere as being “lax” on these things anyway much of this info is not translated into English; you have to read a lot of archive news reports in a variety of languages.
It is all crimes from petty theft to murder / sexual violence (as well as drug offences) that are viewed as having mental health links. Just the same as in the UK someone with a mental health problem who commits a serious violent crime will end up in a prison cell rather than anywhere they can simply walk and and out of.
Even if they are very old when they get caught there is a definite difference in régime/freedom between an residential care home for seniors and a prison elderly wing so its still a punishment.
Things aren’t perfect especially with regard to young peoples mental health – a big example recently was the Germanwings air crash; elswhere in DE there have been bad sexual violence incidents against young women attending University events; a suspected fatal drugs spiking of a young woman from Britain and in NL and DK a rise in sexual harrasment of youths by their own peer groups (as opposed to far older people).
But that is equally bad in the UK and the rest of Northern Europe does at least try and look after the kids in their schools and other places they may gather.
