  • Last year i had a party for a friend at my house. Since my house is not the largest , to avoid the place getting wrecked and make the most of the weather i set up the gazebo and we had it round the back garden . I live in residential area so there are other homes close to me and a few of the neighbours expressed they’re dislike which i understand . This year i would like to do much the same but instead of using the back garden i have permission to use the land on a family firends farm . Would be no more than a few friends , 10 at most with a few beers and some music ( not a rig , just a small home soundsystem type ) , would this be o.k legally ? its not a rave , it may sound silly to ask but im not really all too clued up about about the law thats the reason . just to be on safe side , thanks

    the UK wide law is that the gathering is OK until any neighbour complains. If they call the polis or the Council either authority can take action. if the cops / EHO attend they can order you to turn down the music or even disperse the gathering.

    However in Scotland there may be slightly different laws as well – maybe Raj or someone else from the country knows more.

    with it being on farm land we will be out of the way of any other houses and not in any way causing hassle to anyone , but the police often dont see things in the same way as civilians .

    the impression I get is Scottish cops (and even English ones!) do actually have better things to do than patrol areas looking for noisy parties but in England at least there are a lot of angry locals who will grass up the party as soon as they hear the music, and once someone has made that call its hard for the cops to ignore it unless there are riots, rapes or murders going on at the same time in the same area. Even then cops these days often can spare a unit or two, and if the victims of the violent crime are themselves young they have been known to even divert units from the major crime, stop the rave and then tell the media how the youths holding the rave caused an unneeded diversion from dealing with the big crime!

    Whilst depending on terrain it might not be an issue in Scotland, in this part of England what usually happens is people think they are away from civilisation but there is usually a elderly couple or rural family in a high value country house who hear the event, disagree with is being there and grass it up.

    services like Google Earth can be useful if the photos are detailed enough 😉

    yeah i see what you mean. The farms not far from the outskirts of glasgow where live , but far enough to not cause hassle . like i said it isnt an event or rave just some friends gathering with some music. The only way i can see police seeing us is a passing helicopter and maybe alerting local police to have a look see what happens . I would just like to know where i stand lawfully if this did happen , i aint gonna do it if its likely to get me in trouble

    Sometimes people dob in merely seeing strange cars in the area but this might well be more an English thing as I’ve heard that Scots are more tolerant/hospitable. in England if the cops do arrive you could be ordered to close down and busted if you didn’t.

    Worth waiting for one of your fellow countrypeople to clarify the situation as there may be different laws in place for Scotland.

    Its the same wrt to complaints [if someone complains shut the sound off or they can take your kit away] but I have always found the scots police to be very easy to get on with. As long as you dont take the piss and you behave politely to them they are pretty reasonable.

    Make sure you point the sound equipment at something that will absorb the sound if you can and always send someone with good negotiating skills to the door if they do turn up. {Nothing they hate more than having everyone deny responsibility btw so dont go there…}

    Inviting or informing the neighbours is a good way to avoid complaints – if they know its a one off they usually dont mind too much {if you then kick ther arse out of it they will prob be more pissed off though 😉

    thanks for the really helpfull advice , i will take that into consideration and decide from there. Just hoping its gonna be a nice summer , get out there have some fun in the sun :weee:. Maybe get some camping away for a while too

    raaa good luck n have a good summer:)

    cheers 😉 same to you ….

    ooops :crazy_diz should have mentioned its outdoors lol within the private land though

    I assumed that was what you were doing 😉

    all the above still apply – a quick heads up to any likely to hear the noise should reduce any likelyhood of complaints raaa

    :weee: i will let you’s know what happens , if it happens …..
