Hey, So it’s my best mates birthday this weekend (23/5/15) She’s decided she wants to party in Bristol! I need some advice on the place to be? Thanks in advance ?
Come to Vegfest: Bristol VegFest :: VegFest UK – The UK’s biggest and best Vegetarian/Vegan Festival
It’s a vegetarian festival in the centre of town on Sat-Sun. LTJ Bukem headlining and plenty of other dancey stuff. It’s £3 before 5 or £5 after. Then all the usual Bristol clubs, Lakota, Blue Mountain, Motion etc. What are you into?
Hi, , Thanks for the reply. I think we have decided on The Black Swan, or a night called Whomp! We are looking for something abit more underground, had our hearts set on a free party but not having any luck with that. We are coming from Coventry so anything else you can think if would be appreciated ?
If you’re going to the Black Swan then check out the Plough first – it’s 5 minutes walk away and always has a good vibe – good for pre-drinks. Black Swan is good for ravey stuff – my mate’s doing the lights down there on Sat, but reckons it might be a bit quiet cos there’s so much other stuff going on this weekend. Duvet Vous at the Queen’s Head is a good little underground house night with a slightly older crowd (not the broccoli-head student hipsters you find at most Bristol house events). It’s just around the corner from the Plough. If you do have a vegetable haircut and like to shuffle awkwardly to slowed-down soul vocals overlaid on the same plodding beat for 10 hours, then Love Saves the Day is the main event this weekend – a two-day outdoor festival in Eastville Park (again, just down the road from the Black Swan). It’s expensive though. Headfirst Bristol is a good website that tells you what’s on in all the major venues in town.
Jenzooka how was your birthday thing with your friend? Last party I went to was an Armin Van Buuren event. It was specifically a large crowd, it was supposed to be known for its ‘vibe’ but I found similar large parties near it where the atmosphere was alot better. Maybe it was the dj though…… Progressive House dj’s from Russia are supprisingly fun to listen at a party (it was some type of contest thing). I was supposed to leave around 12:30 but I left when the club closed and it was daytime already. Aside from really great dj’s I recommend parties that are in close vicinity with each other. : )

The Dutch have been commenting for some years about how any event AVB is at attracts fashion-victims; Eurohipsters etc (which is a shame as his music is genuinely good and he also comes across as a genuine person who puts a lot back into EDM and tries to give it a better reputation). I’ve noticed that he himself seems to be increasingly consumed with angst when he is DJ’ing these days (there is a difference between normal nervousness and angst, in the same way there is a difference between progressive house, deep house, soulful house and electro house).
The presence of the Russians and stuff like slowed down soulful house often with androgynous vocalists are not entirely unconnected – it just about gets past whatever rules the Communications Ministry impose on Russian terrestrial and online broadcasting and doesn’t obviously annoy the religious either (compared to lyrics with obvious swearing and people shouting out “bitch” all the time; TBH I am not that keen on music like that nowadays) so tends not to attract unwanted attention.
TBH this now applies to a lot of Europe – which is fast headed back to 1989 anyway so some of this sort of music isn’t anything I haven’t heard before. That said one thing the hipsters might not be aware of is there wasn’t as much division between genres back then as today. Until about 1991 all house and early rave was mixed together by DJs, especially on the pirate stations..
