    what the fuck?

    thats horrible

from what the articles say apparently they did the festival around local election time

they got a license from a supportive liberal councillor but he lost the election to the right wing candidate

this right wing candidate (now the main councillor?) then revoked the license at the last moment and authorised the Guardia Civil (who are gendarmes rather than just police) to disperse the crowd who were gathering for the festival by force

This could happen anywhere in any EU country. In many cases they can use “risk of drug dealing” to override any EU human rights laws. I don’t know the indepth facts about Spanish local government elections but I would expect they are no worse than ours.

There is unfortunately a flaw with democracy – its actually possible to vote away freedom…

    Darkside! thats proper fucked up!

    Proper evil.

police using force for no reason is a disgusting sight to see. Some children where i work (an out of school club) where saying how they saw riot police beating people up at a protest..not sure whereabouts. They saw people with broken arms and blood pouring from their heads and unconscious people lying around. What posses people to harm other people in this way?

I have seen it here at parties but not very often, how somebody could be beaten cos they wanna dance is mental. Some OB like their job a bit to much if you know what i mean.

yeah no what you mean…they must be very sadistic

i hope never to see that at a party..although i do worry sometimes whether that is likely to happen here….

when i go to spain, do my thing and what not my grandad who lives there tells me one thing ”if you see a Guardia Civil (civil guard) officer, leave” these guys are known as the ‘g.c’ or the ‘green police’. i have been told stories by spanish locals who live in the mountains about officers taking people up into the mountains with only the g.s returning, they are brutal and a step up from the officers who dress in black (la policia, national police) and another step up from the municipal police who dress in blue.

the g.c are responsible for national security, customs and crowd control.

I think this is worse though than just cops getting out of hand.

The Guardia Civil have been around for hundreds of years, and this festival has gone on for a few years without people getting any grief from them.

What appears to have prompted the authorities to act was a change in power in the local council shifting to the right wing. Someone from that council ordered them to break up the gathering.

IMO the people who went to the ballot box and voted for the right-wing candidate, knowing (or at least accepting) stuff like this might happen are as guilty as the cops who swung the batons.

Incidentally Spain had an extremely authoritarian Government (by European standards) based on right up until the late 1970s.

i am just going to work GL but i will be interested in a discussion on this when i return if you will 🙂
