I am really worried by all these:
1 stop & search powers (supposedly for anti terrorism purposes)
2 id cards (supposedly to find terrorists (though this didn’t work in the Madrid bombing)/expel illegal immigrants)
3 ASBOs (supposedly to protect the law abiding middle classes from ‘gangs’ of youths)
What these measures are really about are:
1 free rein to interfere with private citizens going about their business although they are not breaking ANY LAW
2 to monitor every person’s movements and reduce our freedom so we are cowed and obedient in the face of ‘the law’.
3 to pander to unsubstantiated fears of a minority fanned by hysterical media coverage. Youths wear hoods because it’s fashion – listen to their conversations and they are about who’s got the coolest phone. Paedophilia is last year’s bogeyman, hence this ludicrous witch hunt.
Why is nothing being done about protesting about these outrageous infringements on our liberty? Has no-one noticed?

TBH I think we (UK) are a country divided just like America – a lot of people are against these and protest (like anti-war march) – OTOH middle England welcomes these clampdowns as they are paranoid of their own children.
So many people are perfectly happy to sacrifice their own personal freedom (or to limit the freedom of others who they feel “do not deserve it”).
Someone on psy-forum a while back said they were worried the UK would end up like North korea. I replied they should be more worried about ending up like South Korea or Singapore – where the presence of a “free market” and relatively high living standards for those who “play the game” overshadow a lack of real tolerance and freedom.
freedom can be relative anyway – for instance those who are prepared to support hunting with dogs are unlikely to welcome an outdoor rave on the same land..
From my research (ranging from checking the media opinion polls to checking the political views of people in real life and on the net ) I have also come to the conclusion its roughly 50% either way – with attitudes getting more entrenched on each side.
To be hohest this information has taken a while to sink in. I was totally horrified when i read the governments pre-election campaign. It is ALL about scaring us! i sincerly never thought id see such obvious orwellian bollocks being pasted over our society. I mean trials without juries? WTF is going on? just coz someone is foreign, they now dont deserve, and wont receive western justice. BNP are quiet coz theyre probably drinking tony’s and blind Daves Health!
Not only do the new “measures” totally go against any concept of a free sociaty, but three days after they’re announced, every chuffing newspaper in the country is having some mass-de(r)bate about whether “shagger” blunket has got a kid on the sly with some unscrupulous editor slut. Who the fuck cares if hes been boofing every bird in sight? (not his sight obviously) He is stripping this country of some of the few things that aren’t shite about it!
I am constantly amazed at the apathy in this country. NO-ONE gives two shits about nowt but their own pay, their own ‘hood, their own kids etc. i was waiting for a massive media backlash against blunket, instead i got some limp letters from law accademics in the back of the guardian. woohoo. freedom of speech!
which of course is another target of the blind fuck-bunny. apparently they are introducing an anti-religious -descrimination law, so i wont be able to say the bible is a nice story, as long as you accept that it is a work of fiction, and that i recon anyone who thinks otherwise is a bit stupid. It is my genuine opinion, but thats all it is. if i was to go and hassle christians, mentally, verbally or physically, thats another matter. but im not. i just recon they’re all a bit wrong in the head. surely it shouldn’t be illegal just to express your own opinion?!
I dont know any more. i am still determined to not let the man get me down, but its a losing battle, as im sure you all know.
Everything happens for a reason, and it all works out best in the end…if only.
Yes, Britain is starting to ape the US in a truely scary fashion – wot’s in the paper today? now we’re being encouraged to attack burglars with offensive weapons. Yikes!! How far we have come from the 60s/70s peace & love.
I dont recognise any of this stuff – Britain is about liberalism, live and let live, play fair etc. Is Blair really being influenced so much by the US? We are being made to conform in ways that I object to with every fibre of my body.
Im trying hard not to turn into a hysterical paranoid person… but the creeping infringement into my personal space/thoughts/choices is hard to ignore. And Im genuinely frightened by it.
As an aside..
Read today about new powers to test drivers for drug driving. It’s true, i confess, i have driven under the influence of drugs, fell asleep at the wheel once and was saved by the patron saint of drug users (Saint EEEEK). Grudgingly I have to agree peeps taking rugs shdn’t drive, its tempting given the price of a cab. But still, i feel my freedoms as an individual eroded. I drove round Manchester as a student with no license, no MOT, no tax, 4 pints down me….those were the days…I also know that I wd hate to harm anyone, so my fun could end in tragedy for someone else so I shd basically take a cab. OK, will take cabs now. grrrrr
oh god, getting old + responsible …its inevitable i s’pose.
911 changed everything. The west needed a new enemy after the demise of the U.S.S.R. When 2 planes flew in2 the W.T.C. the ‘new’ enemy was born. I say new-this had been going on since the crusades. But now with everyone scared of terrorists,it makes passing laws associated 2 terrorism far easier.
And Ethel @ number 65 sleeps easier because somethings ‘being done’ about it. But she doesn’t realise that slowly her civil liberties are being taken from her. And by the time she wants 2 have a party 4 her 50th birthday she’ll b fucked.

but what if she just wants to sleep easily and doesn’t want a 50th birthday party? After all when you no longer trust your neighbours as they might be trrrsts you’r hardly going to want to invite them along…
has anyone else noticed we have imported the US concept where the use of the road can be denied even if a non-traffic related offence has been committed?
DVLA can now revoke a driving license for any other crime on ASBO conditions, people have even been banned from riding their bicycles in some areas!
I should imagine people who see terrorists round every corner,or who are scared of being mugged, burgled or whatever, wouldn’t sleep easy-whatever their cicumstances.
I’m afraid to say this ,but,ASBO’s,identity cards and whatever laws/legistlation the government wants to bring in,it will.
We can’t do anything to stop it-except vote in another party @ the next election. But a different party does not mean they’ll do any different. Unless it’s the Looney Party (no i’m not a supprter-ithink politicians r lieing tossers) and any other harmless nutter that couldn’t run a tap, never mind a country.
