A lot of people do actually like RnB as well as “drug based” dance music. the lyrics do after all represent the sort of things what are going on in their lives – infidelity, domestic violence, fighting for position amongst other young men or women.
some (many) years ago now I was living in a shitty London suburb myself and also liked what were the forerunners of RnB and UK garage grime as well as well as electronic dance music. As did most of my mates.
however, we didn’t want to lob stuff at the OB (and yet I did go on student marches and that stuff) as the real riots of Brixton and Toxteth were still fresh in our minds, as was the miners strike, and from that we learned that overt violence just reinforced the opposition.
I think the difference though is people take the night time economy (including townie places) for granted. 20 years ago any town outside London shut down by 2am and if you were on the streets after that you’d might even have explain what you were up to a cop! Also drugs were there but expensive and not always available, so if you had some you wanted to make the most of your night, not have to deal with beef and 5-0 or that sort of bullshit.. maybe when half the clubs lose their licenses next year people might realise what they are losing…
