been thinking about this for a while..
lets say that via forming a community group we could somehow legally obtain a venue in Suffolk or North Essex what was suitable for “rave-type discos” (as the cops/councils like to call them) :laugh_at:
it would be similar in concept to the carribean club in Ipswich – perhaps more like a big “hall party” than a outdoor rave or squat party….
we’d have to be fairly well behaved (i.e have SIA door staff and not blatantly rack up lines in full view of the public) and be mindful of people ages – as cops can do licensing checks and it wouldn’t be worth putting in all the effort just to get a closure order slapped on the place.
and the crews what used it would have to be responsible enough to look after the space….
it would be similar in concept to the Ungdomshuset or “youth house” of Denmark, you may think “well they can get away with that sort of stuff in foreign lands” – but remember this is only a few hundred kilometres across the sea from us, and that there is a lot of shared history and culture between East Anglia and Denmark..
would you lot be up for something like this? Bear in mind its a lot of work, and if we started planning now it could still take 2-3 years before you got a place but it would be worth it in the end (after all if you are only in your teens or twenties now, what is 2/3 years?)
Ironically GL I’m now in Reading! Good idea though, just don’t really think there’s the energy in Suffolk anymore.
depending what legal structure you go for i might be able to help out… i have some experience of setting up CIC for example
I think its there, but just a lot more spread out due to the sheer size of the area. For instance even my nearest friends live a couple of hours away, it would take me a hours bike ride to meet up with Damo and his friends or to go to Stowmarket and two hours to get to where Mudstomper lives.
Biotech and Titch are far away on the coast you could get a boat to Denmark from there!
A lot of younger people are shocked at the concept of cycling “all that distance”, as if I were entering the Olympics :laugh_at:, and find trains expensive and sketchy.
Of course many people have cars, but they are expensive to run and licenses often hard to keep for people what live the sort of lifestyles we do… This does also mean that those able to afford driving can just go to other areas for parties (albeit at some personal risk if they are driving 200 miles each way and stretching their mental and physical endurance to the limit!)
Eventually though I think people are going to have to rebuild their local scene as stuff like the credit crunch bites (and not make the same mistakes of the 90s yet again..)
Globaloon – thanks for that link. In fact a CIC might be the best idea for this sort of enterprise (would be good for Leviticus too who are already investigating a similar project)
Im def up for the GL and im sure the rest of the crew would be too raaa
good to see the people with kids / families responding…
one thing I’ve noticed is a big baby boom here – loads of people I know have either become recent parents or are expecting new arrivals so there is a big need for a venue what could also maybe host family friendly events during the daytime
I know of a couple from one crew who tried to book a hall for a kids birthday party (perfectly legitimately, they were the parents of said child) but there was such paranoia from some of the yokels in the village where it was planned that ruralwatch got activated as they thought it would turn into a massive rave!
me an some mates are looking into a piece of land to hire to hold a small festival on in the near future, we allready have alot of people who would be up for this but if any knows any good places let me no please or if any stacks want to help out or any djs that want to play.
the money raised if enough is going to go towards a piece of land which will be used for parties festivals and would be able to be rented out seeing as now in norfolk its near enough impossible to do a party without it getting confiscated
anyone else think this is a good idea?
if any djs want to play please pm me with a mix an ill let you no if you have a set if the event takes place
and if any knows any land we would be able to rent out pm info
cheers raaa
it definitely is, although it will take a lot more organisation than just turning up randomly in thetford forest… especially finding a suitable place, as land/buildings will still hold a lot of their value in East Anglia even with the recession…
you need to find somewhere what isn’t prime agricultural land but not a habitat for rare species (as the eco-groups often buy these places), and if you actually wish to use it outside “summer” with some form of covered building… 😉
I think this is a great idea, especially with the current situation in east Anglia perhaps the only way forward at the moment? Could set a good trend for other systems elsewhere to follow too
yea i know theres going to be alot of planning involved but im doing a festival with the college course im doing so im going to take everything i learn from that. but we basically have everthing we need to do it just the land needs sorting then it can go ahead.
do you know if i rent out land will i just need a tens lisence or would i need a proper entertainments lisence this is the the only problem i have as it needs to be legal so theres no hassle from police an it wont come down on the organisers for doing it if theres no proper licensing.
I think there is plenty of energy in suffolk still. Just the people with the common sense and know how have stayed below the radar for a while now.
Im sure alot of the older crews in the area that were around long before the “fuck the babylon” period saw the crack down coming along time ago.
a TENS license is good for up to 500 people. You only need a full PEL for larger events. TENS has already successfully been used by various promoters in Norfolk, Essex and Bedfordshire since 2005.
just wandering are we gonna try and do something with this?
get the ball rollin some how
TBH I think the major sticking point is finding any sort of space and people willing to put in any effort..
at the moment it seems too many are happy with short term term “solutions” like doing a hall party with fake details and forget the knock on effect is has, not surprising no “normal people” are willing to work with any promoters… after all in the real world putting false details on a contract is known as fraud (even if the money for hire etc is paid..)
