  • Freedom & Steve’s won’t do them in the centre on my neck, why is this and anywhere in Ipswich area that will?

Probably something to do with all the nerves and the fact that its is so close to the spinal cord etc on the back of the neck that it may cause problems..

Sorry can’t help with anyone in your area that would do it..

beck tatoo? what the beer or the football player?

    :laugh_at::laugh_at:

Back I ment, back of the neck.

My mate got one in Edinburgh no problem, I think its because alot of people won’t do tats above the collar or beyond the cuffs. Someone once told me that this was illegal but I wouldnt quote me on that as I dont know if its true.

i reckon perhaps the murderer has a tattoo there, so they won’t do any more tattoo’s there so as not to make you a suspect… unless it was you?

      That’s not funny :hopeless:

I would imagine that the tattoist is not keen to tattoo on the spinal column as one wrong move could cause you a lot of problems for the rest of your life. The area around the spinal column especially the neck is one of the most nerve rich areas of your body.

I had essential surgery to the side of my neck when I was 18 and, potentially as a result of that, I have peripheral neuropathy in my hands which means I dont realise how hard I am holding glasses [sometimes I crush them in my hands:yakk:] etc or dont realise I have cut my hands until I see the blood on them.

Look for an more experienced tattoist would be my advice :weee: as this one is obviously not confident in their abilities [and is wise enough to openly admit their limitations]

Rekon someone should get you a pweter tankard for xmas, could save alot of trouble.

I used to be a tattooist and I have tattoos up my back and neck….

It is NOT illegal to tattoo on the face/neck/hands but any tattooist worth his salt would be very wary of tattooing there, unless you already have a lot of tats.

As for the Nerve thing, i’ve never heard of anyone being permanantly damaged by having a back/neck tattoo, The needled only go maybe 1 or 2mm max into the skin, nowhere near deep enough to hit any kind of nerve.

I think you will find it’s just the tattooist own way of working.

I have a barcose on my neck, had it done when I was 17 but I was already covered in peircings and tattoos, and I worked there lol

      Good luck xmas_badger

ivegot a tat on the back of my neck, got it done at styx in norwich. when asking for it, they said that to do it id haveto stay dead still as it was a difficult place i think. i had a star in a circle done, n was told to get the circle right id have to be extremely still because it was an awkward place. never told me id get paralised, feels nice getting your neck tattooed!

its a bit stretched because my head is forward.

I read somewhere that visible tattoos usually just get you rejected at interview for many jobs (OK maybe not so much on somewhere like the docks/ports where they are probably expected!) so maybe the tattooist is worried about being sued for not explaining the risks, or they even have been leaned on by someone in authority to discourage them from creating certain kinds of tattoos…

you may have freedom to get a tattoo, but these guys have to keep their licenses…

as I mentioned in other threads there is a big social conservative backlash against the “counterculture” – its easier than many realise for major employers to keep lobbying the Council at a local level and use their power (often quite subtly) to influence clampdowns on others freedom….

they won’t complain outright about the tattoo parlour but will say things in often confidential Council/Chamber of Commerce meetings like

“we did try to recruit locally but found that we were unable to sufficient staff due to inappropriate attitude for the job and appearance, particularly clothing, hairstyles and prominent tattoos. Therefore, these positions were filled by overseas workers”…..

ive never had a problem getting a job because of a tattoo. ive had oneon my arm sine i was 16, never tried to hide it and no one seems to have battered an eyelid. Ive weorked in shops, cafe’s, offices, bars, even for a company thats focused around children’s holidays. If someone was to say i couldnt have the job due to tattoos i wouldnt want to work there anyway. Only time i got turned down for a job, was for expresso’s nr st. andrews hall norwich, because i had bright red hair. i wasd told if i dyed my hair i could have the job, but i turned it down.

It may be different for girls though, as to potential employers (looking at how customers would perceive this person) a small tattoo on a girl may be seen as rebellious but it perhaps isn’t seen as threatening like it can be for blokes… (they are still often associated with “hard man” types and “gang” culture) – market forces make many employers have to pander to their customers’ personal prejudices.

And you are the sort of person who if turned down for a job would just go out and look for another job until you get one…

Of course if a man normally would wear a long-sleeved shirt at work no one can complain; and arm tattoos are more tolerated in construction or other manual jobs – but people who get neck tats have more difficulty covering it up

whats probably happening is that people (particularly blokes) are being turned down for jobs, then go and sign on and when the giro people say “why can’t you get a job” they say “well its because of my tattoos, innit” (perhaps just to see if its easier to claim)

and this gets reported back to the others in authority such as those in the local Councils…

its all done by subtle control and intimidation – not official policy of councils but one or two council types saying “we are keeping an eye on you for “health and safety” reasons..”

and doubtless you will get some person (even if they are in their 20s!)who can’t get a job “because of tattoos”, then their parents who end up supporting them will try and blame the tattoo parlour (instead of thinking of personal responsibility) and whinge in the local Archant rags, giving the place bad publicity..

This (coupled with any potential medical and health risks) may be putting off the tattoo parlour staff… companies don’t turn down business unless there is a good reason for it.
