  • OMG has anyone heard about that teacher who was arrested in sudan?
Read the report and you can see this is a serious over-reaction!

    ‘Muhammad’ teddy teacher arrested

A British schoolteacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam’s Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad. Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, said she made an “innocent mistake” by letting the six and seven-year-olds choose the name.

Ms Gibbons was arrested after several parents made complaints.

The BBC has learned the charge could lead to six months in jail, 40 lashes or a fine.

      That’s just crazy

They should bear in mind it was only a teddy. :yakk:

Sorry for the pun but couldn’t help it.

Not a pleasant situation but the media might consider focusing on more important news, there’s lots out there…

If I were a cynic I might think it co-incides nicely as a distraction with Labour taking illegal donations, train prices hiking and reshuffling mortgages that could wind up seeing quite a few folks homeless……

      agreed

      oh ffs

      From BBC news web page;

Chairman Massoud Shadjareh said: “Both the Sudanese government and the media must refrain from using Islam and Islamic principles to legitimise this fiasco, which may result in the unjust conviction of an innocent person, and which will only lead to the promotion of Islamophobia and further demonisation of Islam.”
And a spokesman for the Muslim youth organisation, the Ramadhan Foundation, said “this matter is not worthy of arrest or detention and her continued detention will not help repair the misconceptions about Islam.”

I’m just playing devils advocate here really and this does not actually represent my view but for sake or discussion…..she was living in their community and broke their laws. A lot of countries are particularly harsh with regards to their sentences on some crimes in comparison to ours. Sudanese law is based upon the islamic faith so would it not make sense to study this first, I mean you can’t just assume that Sharia law will be the same as the Brittish law. Its like when people smuggle drugs into Thailand expecting a lenient sentence because they are foreign. She picked the thing that pissed them off, which is a shitter but laws are laws. Do we let Muslim people use Sharia law over here? No they have to follow British laws like a British person does.

They were very lenient with regards to the sentencing available there. 15 days is alot less than a year and it would seriously ruin the strength of the legal system if they let some foreigner get away with “insulting Mohammad” just because they didn’t know. While we may not be particularly religious the people of Sudan clearly are and the lenient penalty has already raised serious issues with a lot of Sudanese people, who are not happy at all, and in a country as unstable as Sudan any political unrest could spell disaster.

Its a shitter that its something that seems so innocent but it can’t be that difficult to understand how naming a teddy bear Mohammad is slightly degrading to the name, I mean look what happened in Denmark with the comic strip.

Have you seen what some people in Sudan want now?
Many ‘protesters’ are in the street calling for the teachers execution!

      Words fail me!

no diffferent IMO from the right wing groups that protest in this country (and sometimes attack people).

Protestors/activists are still a minority in most countries though, what matters is that the woman is actually alive and well and hasn’t been taken away and done away with which is what could happen in many other countries, and that two British Asian politicians from our country are lobbying for a diplomatic solution and her release.

In Britain we may be free to call our soft toys Mohammed or even Jesus or Mary without being nicked, but it doesn’t mean the whole nation supports free expression

This July, a rave in my area was closed down by 70-100 riot cops from 3 different forces. The cops openly admitted in the media they had used a larger level of force than usual, and there were pictures of a standoff between cops and ravers.

A local poll on a news website (despite this site being heavily vistited by pro rave people) still showed results saying that 50% of respondents thought the cops didn’t do enough. What did they want to happen? The use of baton rounds or even live ammunition to disperse the crowd?

There is also still considerable support for the death penalty in this country, and a return to traditional Christian/Victorian values. Just because the haters don’t take to the streets doesn’t mean they aren’t still out there..

Incidentally I wonder what would happen if someone called a kitten Mohammed, given that the prophet himself was fond of cats?
