Hello everyone, just started looking into all of this, thinking about trying it out, does anyone have a rough idea of how much it would cost to put a warehouse night on from experience?
Bearing in mind i’m based in the north and sorted for dj equip, so it would be the cost of all licenses needed, security and what not.
Also, where’s a decent place in Sheffield to hire out a soundsystem? Or is it more a case of buddying up with a group of people who would hire out theirs to me?
Just the case of finding those people….
Thanks
Does anyone have any experience of this recently. I’m wondering whether for a small (circa 200) trance party with landowners permission, whether it’s better to apply for a TENs or not.
Thanks for any advise.
With a TENS the worst they can do is say no and even then you have a right of appeal, whereas even with landowners permission an illegal rave can be busted hard and your rig taken. Also action both civil and criminal can be (and sometimes is) launched against the landowner, and all it takes is for one person in the area to disagree and call 999 to a illegal rave.
Organisers of illegal events in my area have had a lot of equipment confiscated and destroyed, and some have even gone to prison.
A TENS event is licensed so you would be subject to the same protection as any legit entertainment business (provided you remain within noise bands for your area).
what country/region of the UK are you in?
Thanks for your reply GL.
Party will be in Hampshire.
The problem is exactly that – them being able to say no. How likely is that, even if the details on the TENS dress it up as a private birthday party?
At present only the Police and Council can object to it on grounds of “crime or disorder” rather than nimbys. If you and your crew and crowd aren’t known for causing trouble they are very unlikely to do so. That said, the new Government is trying to change the laws to give locals more say but this is unlikely to happen before the end of the year.
In most cases they are much more likely to let you have the event and leave you alone, provided you can show you’ve taken adequate steps to keep people safe and avoid noise pollution.
OK, thanks for the info.
thought I’d bump this as the laws haven’t yet been changed to make it harder and if anything cops in some areas are dropping hints they’d be willing to accept TENS apps more than previously.
I know of at least two this year in Essex – they don’t get talked about on here as much because they are so popular they don’t need to advertise and the 400+ tickets sell out quickly – plus sometimes no publicity is better than giving a voice and platform to the nimbys, but Essex is one of the hardest places to get a EDM event licensed as it was rinsed “back in the day” by both legal and unlicensed events….
I know some people are unhappy with the concept of being held accountable by the authorities but TBH that will happen to UME organisers anyway when they get caught, and for a younger person with local community links to farming etc it might not be so bad if they can genuinely run a safe, friendly local event…
it must be less hassle now and less cost than driving 100-200 miles to a bait event what gets busted, and they don’t need fuckloads of security either if well run, the one I went to a few years ago just had some hippys in yellow hi vis vests with decent UHF radios, and if there were “heavier” security they kept themselves discreet – if you don’t have lots of kids being bluelighted off site to the ED from overdoing drugs or fighting then the authorities do leave you alone…
there was one just recently in North Essex, the nimbys did whinge “could be heard in the next county” but the location was Bures and the Stour runs through the village (its the blue thing in the map below) so half is in Essex and the other half in Suffolk 😉

This is not good. Don’t break the law. Seen.
Hello peeps
Seriously considering a TENS event near Reading this summer. I have a quick question for those with previous experience. I understand the TEN will allow the sale of alcohol….but must is be sold by an already licensed person, or does the provision of the TEN allow me to stock, man and run my own bar?
Cheers
Dan
I’d double check with the Council and TVP but I am fairly certain that if you are over 18 and are known to be a responsible person of good character that you can run your bar, but you or whoever is on the TENS will be personally responsible in both criminal and civil Court for any problems which might happen there.
I’ve also heard from friends that Reading’s nightlife has been clamped down on loads in recent times even compared to when I last lived there (2006) but to be fair OOOPS always had a fairly good working relationship with the Councils from what I remember.
Cheers fella – That was kind of the impression that I got. Since possibly losing our wicked venue of the last two years, I need to try and sort summat out for the 20th Anniversary – can’t just let it slide by – although I do have a bunch of sets for us at UMF in sept.
I will continue to investigate, and hope to be in a position to announce summat pretty soon 🙂
