  • I’m spending a lot of my time correcting text layouts for staff who’ve pasted text but couldn’t be bothered to add carridge returns. It matters and I’ve got better things to do with my time…

If guilty.. my apologies Doc… i know you’re a busy man..

I take it this is the problem that occurs when relaying text from the BBC site and newspapers?

I’ve noticed it and tried to avoid it but it seems to look OK the first time round and then get mangled the next time you look at the post..

What I have been doing recently (but more for security reasons to dispose of embedded HTML and potential single pixel trackers) is cutting and pasting such text into Notepad first.

In fact when I worked in the Civil Service I often used to type posts into notepad first and then paste them so my on-line time didn’t show up so much on the web monitoring software :groucho:

I’ve done it with this test post…

    Is this formatting OK?

    what are carridge returns?

    Sorry Dr

    :flowers::flowers::flowers::flowers:

I will add extra lines of space between block of text from now on.

Just in case I havent got this right this is what I think I should be doing:

making paragraphs and separating them with a line of space between the paragraphs to break up the text blocks? And left formatting the text too?

[My apologies for not always formatting the text correctly – I wont do it again now I know what the problem was it. Sorry to have caused such a waste of your time :flowers:]

I shouldn’t have raised this publicly. Still it’d be nice if we kept it in mind…

    Its not a problem Dr:love:

I am happy to know how to not cause you to waste your time editing my posts – they looked ok when I put them up and I am sorry I didnt check by reloading to make sure they stayed ok. i am supposed to be freeing up your time by modding not wasting more of it 😉

The issue of how you want the posts to look is one everyone needs to be aware of anyway so its as well to discuss it openly in here:groucho:

I know what you mean but TBH I am not sure it is just carriage returns but a problem with line breaks in odd places, extra inserted spaces and other embedded objects that can get transferred when cutting and pasting from one website to another

These things were presumably put in to the original content to solve a layout problem on the source website; but cause formatting problems when they end up here.

I presume these have become a problem because our editors are more advanced and are taking in all the embedded control codes/graphics/objects rather than just plain text.

did the test I did using Notepad produce acceptable results?

I don’t even understand what a carridge return is!!!! :hopeless:

I hadn’t noticed the problem myself. Apologies if I am responsible.

carriage return is the button you use to change line [when you end one and want to start the next]

it is also known as the return key on a computer keyboard or as the enter key [the one found next to the letters]

Alex’s test looks good, thanks for going to the trouble of trying it out…

I could be mis-translating from the french term ‘retour a la ligne’ or thinking in old destop publishing terms. Anyway it just means properly paragraphed text I guess and apologises again for my outburt…
