The worst part of this is these people seem to be from the “old skool rave” generation – perhaps seduced by the attractions of SE Asia after backpacking or a “full moon party” they thought they could form a idealistic new life together…. only for everything to end in tragedy.
A cautionary tale for the rest of us…
‘I was drunk’ says Phuket killer
The former boyfriend of a teacher found dead in Thailand has told the BBC he killed her when he was drunk. The body of Debra O’Hanlon, 31, from Kettering, Northamptonshire, was found at a guesthouse in Phuket on Tuesday.Paul Chetwynd-Talbot, 32, of Bristol, who gave himself up to police on Wednesday, said they were both drunk when they had a “stupid” argument.
He told BBC East’s Sally Chidzoy he believes Miss O’Hanlon’s neck broke when he threw her on a bed.
“Ten minutes earlier we were with friends laughing and joking in the pub. The room in which she was found in was covered in blood – all of that blood was mine. I didn’t want to carry on living.
I walked towards the bathroom, she slapped me, I grabbed her hand and tossed her onto the bed.
Paul Chetwynd-Talbot“What I’ve done can’t be put into words.
“We were both drunk. It was just a stupid argument. I walked towards the bathroom, she slapped me, I grabbed her hand and tossed her onto the bed. Her face hit the headboard, I think I broke her neck.”
He said if he had to spend the rest of his life doing something to try and make Miss O’ Hanlon’s life worthwhile, he would.
After Mr Chetwynd-Talbot was arrested Thai police said he had tried to slash his wrists after Miss O’Hanlon’s death.
On Thursday morning, BBC Asia correspondent Jonathan Head said: “Thai police are saying he came into the police station and admitted he’d beaten her.
“Apparently he was quite distraught and had slashed his wrists some time before.”
He remains in police custody in hospital.
Police said Miss O’Hanlon, who taught at a school in Cambridgeshire, had a broken neck and stab wounds to the head.
Officers said it appeared that she had struggled with her attacker in the beach resort of Patong.
Friends of Miss O’Hanlon reported her missing after she failed to keep an appointment on Sunday. She had been due to fly back to Britain on Tuesday.
On Wednesday Miss O’Hanlon’s father, Malcolm, said the family was too distressed to speak about her death.
Her mother Patricia and sister Julie were being comforted at the family home in Wellingborough.

latest: a former girlfriend of the accused has now posted on SJ alleging that he was a regular cocaine user, and showed controlling/bullying behaviour in their (short-lived) relationship….
Isn’t the worst part of this the fact that an innocent life was taken – regardless of what scene the murderer was into?
Maybe I’ve lost track of what’s really important…
the loss of life is terrible… that goes without saying – and sadly, lots of people are subjected to violence or killed by their partners worldwide which is always unacceptable.
And if I relayed and commented every incident of violence that happened amongst young people to the news forum here, I’d probably crash the board and/or end up suffering mental health problems myself having been subjected to so much bad news (and I can handle a lot of harsh stuff without cracking)
but what I was getting at that these two came across as the sort of “fun loving party types” who often travel to Thailand and other such countries as an offshoot of the rave scene.
many ravers claimed (at least in the early 90s) to live a lifestyle which is about peace, love, unity and respect
they argued that their lifestyles were better than your average middle englander… celebrating diversity and love rather than “normal people” in society caught up in their dogmas of conventional gender roles and social control structures. this was also used to justify the hedonistic aspects of rave such as use of recreational drugs and alcohol (which many other people in society find quite abhorrent).
many people on the early rave scene claimed to respect all races, genders etc equally – you didn’t expect those who liked parties and hedonism to be beating up their partners on the comedown (although with hindsight this was a naive POV)
but I still believe that this was one of the good things the party lifestyle had going for it – so when I see someone involved in a hedonistic lifestyle turning to violence I consider it to be a betrayal of our entire community (which also makes the case for our lifestyles harder to justify) as much as a crime to the rest of society and the victims…
but sadly it seems there are a lot of predators about on our scene, people must beware of them..
I used to work at the same company as this guy about 3 years back, so I was quite suprised to see his face in the paper today, as I remember him he was a stuck up, wanna be con artist carrying a false name trying to be something he was capable of carrying off. He got the sack for being a dodgy blagger. When you’ve been a raver, you can tell if someone else has been, even when they’ve moved on to other things, that expansive philosphy generally persists in one way or another. OK this guy used coke but having met him and spoken to him I’m telling you he could never have been a raver, he’d have been fucking lost among all those happy people enjoying themselves I’m sure.
That said I’m not writing this to disagree with your general point, just in this case I don’t think he was a party goer, we’ve all seen people behave in all kinds of ways when drugs go wrong, I was phyically attacked by my closest friend as he suffered at the mercy of narcotic induced paranoia, so it’s entirely within the realms of possibility for an incident like this to come out of the back of the rave scene.
It’s not as a result of the scene though, more a consequence of taking too many mind bending drugs than is good for you which in my experience used to happen alot way back when, responsible partying for the sake of the scene is never something that would have crossed my mind I must say.
I think it was Ghandi that said “Everything in moderation”
Be Safe
I knew this guy about 4 years ago, and yeah he was into his drugs but so were alot of the people we hung around with. The difference with Paul is that he was a pathological liar and con artist. Everyone’s first impressions of him were how genuine and nice he was – an act he managed to keep up for quite a while with some people. Unfortunately, he was always used to getting his way so, although I was shocked to see him arrested for murder, in hindsight I think it was only a matter of time before he snapped when someone stood up to him – his normal response would be to run but I guess he had nowhere else to go.
