yeh that was pretty distressing to watch, its just so far beyond my understanding to think that in any way those police could have thought they were doing something morally right
it was the time of the miners strike . the ob loved it.sorry but they did !
some of the associated links are definately worth a look !
society was a lot more polarised and unstable then, there was much more tension between different classes, cultures, racial groups.
People didn’t whinge about things on the internet (it didn’t exist then for public use..) or in the freer media we have today (media of the early to mid 80s was a lot more closely controlled, as big companies controlled the resources) – instead they took to the streets and literally fought their corner, citizens and cops (then even more so representing Middle England/the “right wing) alike.
The alternative scene had actually gained a fair bit of ground then, but a backlash from Thatcho and Middle England led to stuff like the beanfield happening.
Also there were proper riots in cities, it seemed that there was a bomb every few months from the IRA, we lived under the shadow of atomic war, and other races/cultures weren’t really accepted until the late 80s when a short-term boom in the economy made people temporarily forget their differences.
Life may seem harsh today but looking back the 80s were a lot worse (although we seem to be going back in that direction).
i think the fact that so many people have cameras now is what stops things like this happening. the bust of the Essex mega rave last year didnt start until it was dark. even though it had started in daylight .
could this have been because they (OB) didnt want to be filmed .
I certainly know that wasn’t case a few years ago at the poll tax riots in Colchester, when the backup arrived, it came it the form of riot squad fully tooled up with no numbers and scarves on to hide their faces and, even though we’d all calmed down and were ebjoying a spliff or two in the castle gardens, well, they had a job to do so they steamed into anyone that made the slightest squeak of objection!
Well found Phogey. We need reminding from time to time what they’re capable of…Fucking OB, all we want to do is party in a field for free.
It’s awful. I just couldn’t see it happening today, though, or certainly not to the same extent.
What with stuff like The Warehouse Project bringing the scene further above ground, I suppose it’s gonna divert more attention onto dealing with the spill-out of those events than arseing around looking for 100 people in a field, which is probably a good thing. Especially if it makes events like this less likely to happen again…
