making me feel bad; my bikes are hiding in the sshed neglected…one customised tourer and one rebuilt mountain bike; used to both be shit hot
hmmm maybe time to get them out again
:groucho:
smart looking bike SdZ
here’s my beast.. it’s an ex-rental bike from my local shop… they’re really helpful in there with advice about repairs etc and if I can’t or don’t want to do it myself they often only charge for the parts, unless the boss is there
I nearly got a Ridgeback hybrid (curiously, the mid-range Ridgeback hybrid and 06 Raleigh Pioneer are virtually identical in design (selection of drivetrain etc) bar the suspension seatpost!))
I don’t really do that much trail/off road riding (unless I am trying to find a detour out in the sticks or have blindly followed my GPS instead of using my brain and am stuck in deepest muddiest bumpkin-land) so have always preffered bikes with 700c wheels
I do also own a Dawes tourer (Horizon, the entry-level model) but I have already been 4500 miles on it (including a number of Ridgeway raves, which involves some “challenging” terrain when you are on 700c x 28 tyres! and a few components are starting to wear and need attention….
thinking of buying the tools and workstand and doing the overhaul myself..
I used to be well into repairing my bike myself but i could never get it to work aswell as this local bike shop i use managed. These days i just get it serviced by them every 3-6 months.
Getting the brakes & gears just right is bloody hard. Im due another service as i cant change the front gear at all at the moment.
In fact im gonna call em now. This thread has made me wanna get out on to the local hills.

Same here mate. I try and do as much as I can, but when it comes to the drivetrain and brakes the shops always seem to have the edge. I enjoy doing it myself but you can’t compromise when performance is an issue.
I’ve repaired brakes etc before but the main thing is the time-pressures as you are learning new skills.
The staff in the shop can do things quicker because ‘they see hundreds of bikes every week and have learned the intricacies of the different assemblies/components and how to deal with them (and the specialist tools)
Shimano et al also make them sign on to “training programmes” which also give them advance warning of issues, service tips etc.
Further, in any decent bike shop mechanics are left alone in their own space with few interruptions
Most DIYers find they are in trouble either because of lack of specialised tools or because they are being distracted by other pressures (such as being worried about their own abilities/stressed as they need the machine to ride to work the next day) – but it is actually a lot easier than people think to repair bicycles..
there is a quote which is all over the net..
“Assembly of Japanese bicycle require great peace of mind”.
(especially if you are trying to decipher the Shimano service guides!”)
wow isnt dewy eyed innocence a great saviour?
i have rebuilt both my bikes after a complete strip down and respraying them myself…even down to replacing forks, drive trains, brake assemblies…
amazing what you can do when no one has told you how difficult it is:wink:

I’m inspired :bounce_fl
(mainly by the glorious weather -fair weather cyclist that I am)
to get my old ‘un fixed up if I can get it out of the undergrowth that is the bottom of my garden,
its a pashley ‘sit up and beg’ bike
i.e: I look like the wicked witch out of the wizard of Oz (mainly as I am followed by flying monkeys when ever I go out on it) :crazy_dru

Looks a beautiful city Dr, and so laid back. Must make that visit one day. It was meant to happen last year but it fell through.
