Although first written in 1990 and originally aimed at users of a text-based message system that was most commonly used with analogue modems and ISDN terminals (forums like this only started becoming popular when always on broadband access arrived) they are still valid today.
One important difference back then was that far less people had access to the Internet; those who did knew a lot more about computers, many of them were linked to the defence/security agencies in one way or or another added to which the messages all were transmitted in plain text had a lot of clues in the top header that could be used to stalk someone to their workplace or home area; especially when search engines became common.
So most folk behaved well only because the whole lot was wide open there was no real expectation of privacy and the knowledge that even in advanced / liberal countries you could be held accountable for what you did online. This is still the case today even if all the headers/code numbers are hidden behind pretty pictures and coloured text…
Yeah that’s a very old piece of text.
Sorry I’ve broken every rule, I’ll try harder in future.

I found some even older stuff on a random .dk link I was going to ask Angel and Sinner about before I even dared share them – it looked like half a server directory listing still wide open; and references to some University in Copenhagen complete with dial in numbers; with a mixture of RFCs, server config info (from 1990 onwards) – the phone numbers may not be so old as they were 8 digits long and I vaguely remember that may only have happened in the mid 1990s. Was tempted to dial them to see if there was still a carrier at the end but didn’t want to get trouble for bothering random people if they were reallocated, plus it costs about €0,08 per minute from the GSM terminal (which is a Nokia) that would have a chance of actually connecting correctly and present a valid caller ID…
Some of the Danish texts were that old they did not have Æ Ø etc but used brackets and other characters for these (which must have been a hassle for computer scientists as the brackets are needed in programming, so the terminal equipment used to display them would have to switch modes regularly; but I couldn’t find the original mapping anywhere…)
