Pinched form other site ….this needs talking about ….raaa
Do you ever feel your rights are being undermined by nanny-state-ism and political correctness?
With new anti-smoking legislation coming into force in July do you think smokers should speak out?
Some places now even have a no smoking policy in the grounds of their premises!
Isn’t it all getting just a bit fucking stupid?
There was a member of the Scottish LVA (publicans’ organisation) on the radio in the summer saying it had been a disaster for rural pubs and the invasion by hordes of non-smokers hadn’t happened. He said it would only get worse as the weather got colder and more pubs would close. In small communities, the pub is often all they’ve got in the way of social glue.
What is going to happen to parties at clubs? How many will have outdoor areas, that is, if they even let you in with cigarettes? Are they going to let people in and out onto the street for a fag? Doubtful.
I won’t be going to any parties where I can’t smoke and I expect many others won’t either.
The ban should be seen for what it is – another New Labour control mechanism, they even hope to police it by putting up posters, etc., with grass-a-smoker hotlines.
Sick, and scarily Orwellian IMO.
Surely some organised mass disobedience is called for, I mean, the French wouldn’t let their government do this, but the English will probably bend over and take it as usual.
Yeah and I bet the fuckers will still be happy to sell you cigarettes with 400% tax or whatever it is. Hypocritical bag o’shite.
I know it must be irratating for the people that dont smoke!
But i really dont like the smoking ban!
the local pub i go to has had to cancel all DJ events for a month because of the ban..also OB are likely to be doing searches
I’m a smoker and am happy with the ban.
This might not be a popular opinion amongt smokers or civil liberties folk, but I know my mates who do not smoke, get really pissed off breathing in and smelling of smoke on and after a night out.
Cigarettes have been killing a disproportionate number of working class blokes like me forever, especially in the north and Scotland. I fucking hate the things.
Also, the tobacco industry is one of the most foul cartels around. If this dents their imoral profits, no bad thing.
(takes cover 😉
Your right, heavy
i get what you’re saying April, I went through this last year, I live in work accomodation and the whole of the NHS sites went smoke free as an example to others:yakk:
I went ape, got really pissd off, felt victimised, bullied etc but had a hard think about stuff.
Figured I’m mad at these guys but what they’re actually doing is positive for my health, strokes, cancer etc etc etc and tried to figure out why I smoked.
to cut it short . . . ended up realising that there’s some fat smug bastard sittin on a yacht somewhere on my hard earned cash.
Had a vision of this fat smug c**t leering down at me, holding out my rolling baccy in his hand saying . . . “heheheh give me your money little girl and I’ll give you cancer” :omg:
I gave up that day.
Don’t like the theory of nanny-state, but can’t argue the fact that smoking is f**king awful nasty for your health so . . . (shrugs)
its not so much the ban itself which worries me but the potential for “function creep”.
To enforce the ban means having more Council licensing officials equipped with suitable comms equipment (airwave radios, which can also talk directly to the Police and are mobile phones as well so they can be passed tip-offs from the Council) as well as maybe cameras and other surveillance equipment.
It can also be argued that letting people in and out of venues is a security weakness whereby drug dealers could get in or get substances in to a venue, so the Police will be keeping an eye out for this as well/
Eventually authorities may be using the smoking ban to place further scrutiny on all late night events and close down those that break any sort of licensing rule. it could see the end of the late night economy in areas where they can afford to lose the revenue from it.
It is 1600s Puritanism backed up by 21st Century technology.
i think the ban is pure hypocrisy
smoking is bad for your health, no doubt. i believe that it also harms other people’s health. BUT in the city I live in, pollution from cars is so bad that just living here and breathing is equivalent to smoking 24 cigarettes a day. nothing is being done about that. in fact more roads are being widened and more car parks are being built encouraging yet more cars to pollute the air even worse and it’s being done at taxpayers expense
non-smokers can choose to not go to a pub or to go to a smoke-free pub (which have been becoming more common in the last few years anyway) whereas I can’t choose to not breathe the air in the place where I live
aside from the hypocrisy it’s just nasty meddling from the govt who are paying council workers to sneak about in their free time and get people in trouble with the law for using a product that they buy legally and which contributes £billions in taxes
how the hell is it gonna be held down…cant see it working ..?:crazy_dru
howz it gone down in scotland .,..??
why hasnt there been no questions asked about where people will go in clubs ..will they be allowed outside …will there be more bouncers outside to watch for trouble ..etc ….:crazy_dru
Glo, living in your city is equivalent to smoking 24 cigs a day?
Which city?
Where do those figures come from?
I am a scottish non smoker….
From my point of view [an asthmatic] it has been pleasant to be able to go into cafes, restauarants and pubs without having to have my inhalers in my pocket just in case someone blew cigarrette smoke in my face [results of this have almost resulted in hospital trips :hopeless:] but I can see how it has damaged bar takings and venue profits…and as I never went to smoky places anyway it didnt affect me much anyway
What I have noticed is that now groups of people lurk [around the doors usually] to smoke outside the venue which is a bit weird tbh and they have cigarette butt boxes outside places to stop people throwing the butts down on the pavement….you get talked to by some random folk which doesnt bother me much but I can see some folk finding it intimidating to walk past….and the police have been know to use anti terrorism legislation to break up groups of smokers outside places [where the f*ck are they supposed to go???]
I am not sure the ban is a good thing – prob has helped people give up smoking though – smokers are treated like social pariahs [while the goverment rakes in the taxes] and made to feel unclean – I dont agree with this kind of social controls though [the road to hell is paved with good intentions ] and people will continue to smoke if they really want to :you_crazy
Which city?
Where do those figures come from?
I live in Exeter (one of the worst polluted places in England, purely due to car traffic)
A mate who tried to give up smoking recently was going to the smoking clinic and when they take carbon monoxide tests, it was really high. he told the nurse she hadn’t been smoking and she said, “I believe you. it’s normal if you live in town”
it was a study commissioned by Calor Gas… reported on here>>> http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,,1292524,00.html
Well its a week tomorrow, i am a smoker too. Actually what time does it kick in? I am out in the local lclub for a mates birthday next Sat night, will it be after the clubs close? Or maybe they want to be tossers and inforce it at a stupid time!
Well i am going to smoke over the summer, but if smoking becomes a major pain in the arse. I will quit, i like smoking but if it become a mission to go for a fag i will give up. I cant be arsed with spending half my night trying to have a fag, would rather be dancing away.
Probably what they are hoping us smokers will do, ok they beat me but probably for the better.
Bring on the smoking ban, looking forward to seeing what it brings.
:biggreen:
Right from a scottish smokers point of view!!
The ban is actually ok… right yes u go to a gig say something at the SECC but see if you cant smell smoke or are too busy enjoying urself you dont actually want one.
Clubs have outside areas where you can go and have a fag ( I think legally they have to provide for the smokers) ..yes is a Q most of the time but hey again no smelly no wanty!!. There are more bouncers outside just incase trouble brews plus incase people try and sneak in through that way plus your hand gets stamped saying you been through the smoking area and they check it in and out!
The way I see it is I go out I dont spend as much as not buying so many fags plus dancing away I dont need to worry about being burnt or burning someone else!
Up here they have employed Smoking police that parade round gigs looking for people having a sly one and if they find u … get kicked out ( not worth hassle for a quick one).
Most pubs have a covered area too so you can sit outside or stand and have a smoke….
Really when it started here I was not sure about it but you get used to it really quickly and dont stress about it!
I did have 1 guy walk past me one lunch time and went should not be smoking here!! Was out on street .. just said to him is legal on street you dont like it then they should stop selling them which basically cant really do ..
As long as u are in a place with more than 50% open air u can smoke is not too hard to stick to but have to admit has stopped me going to pubs as much as I used to .. is the thing drink in you want to smoke more!! Pubs are suffering but hey all they need to do is out a canopy up outside for the smokers and should be ok works here!!
Not going to be as bad in England as up here so I have read! Dont stress u will get used to it:group_hug :group_hug Hope this helps
However if you are a performer, all is not too bad. Vinyl DJs are oficially classed as performers too (musicians union) – and if you click below to the official government papers, scroll down and read section 6 :weee:
