I need to get a new soldering iron. Mostly for discrete components/wiring – I don’t have the kit for surface mount yet
What would you lot suggest is a decent make and rating?
:laugh_at:
well I did hear that since 2006, the solder had all changed to this lead-free “Euro-solder” with a higher melting point :laugh_at:
I’d been looking at getting myself this one http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=45739&C=Maplin&U=SearchTop&T=soldering%20iron&doy=25m11
it’s cordless and is cool to touch seconds after using it.. plus tis only £20
we have a gas soldering iron [portasol p1k] which has a variety of heads you can get for it and has been used extensively since we got it [actually I wondered why it took me so long to get round to buying one now I have one :laugh_at:]
bought it online from tait components ltd and loved their customer service too
We got a load of that lead free stuff in at work and it’s shit, doesn’t flow properly and it spits at u, I think its headed for the bin. There’s still plenty of lead solder around, we’re using this at the moment: http://www.rapidonline.com/productinfo.aspx?tier1=Tools%2c+Fasteners+%26+Production+Equipment&tier2=Soldering+Equipment&tier3=Solder+%26+Fluxes&tier4=Solder&moduleno=30236
I’ve not got a lot of experience with different solders or anything, but that one seems to work well. The irons we use at work are soldering stations, with an extractor to take away the fumes, not sure what make they are though.
If it’s still there try the electronics place on Bramford Road (just further down from Wilberforce St) , Ken the owner knows his stuff and is always willing to cut a deal
