too right yanks cant take higher moral ground, UK neither. is why thye arent boycotting olympic games ceremony. Tibet could become new Israel.. a new epicentre of world conflict
its really sad i feel so sorry for them defo think that documentary is worth a look this week
alltho it’s more bad shit happening (protesters getting battered ect.) that has made tibbet become “major” news again .. but i am glad it is in the spot light again as it could of so easly of got swept under the caprpet after the last protests
Watched that docu on c4 about Tibet. Gotta say some of it was shocking and the way some Tibetans<?! are treated reminds me of Nazi Germany. Absolutely appalling! Even a slight slur on the 'good' name of China can result in death!!! :you_crazy:sad:
How the fuck did China get the Olympics as well? I for one am gonna boycott these events!
Also China need to be careful as well cos Tibet might turn into a Chechnyan style conflict should the Tibetans abandon their non-violent ways!!
not being arsey just wondering why you think that.
your avarage tibet fella lived like shit when the monks where in charge , lower than the lower while the old llama is living it up in his mountain palace, this way everyone will be equal(er)
communist:wink:
seroiusly tho i watched some documentary and they still have a pretty meager excistance even with china in charge.
and this is just false advertising.
Well before the chineese occupation, Tibet limited its own contact with the outside world. So I guess their wishes were to still have a traditional lifestlye, rather than accept the modernisation of Tibet which is happening under chineese rule.
I’m not sure I’d agree that tibetan quality of life is better because of the chineese. China is literally paying Han chineese people to emigrate to Tibet, the already tiny population of ethnic Tibetans will soon be a minority in their own country. Plus with the discrimination there, the chineese get all the best jobs, and the tibetans end up just as poor as they always were.
Whatever you think about the dalia llama, Tibetan people in Tibet still worship him, 50 years since he fled, risking imprisonment for doing so. So if they want some guy in a robe telling them what to do that much, I’d let them, wouldnt you?
i heard somethin about the olympic flame lightin bein disrupted
major respect if they manage it
major respect if they manage it
Innit! raaa
When the monks were in power Tibet was a feudal state where Tibetans were largely slaves. The current Chinese government might not be great, but its a million times better than Tibetan theocratic feudalism. The United States has for geopolitical reasons elevated the Dali Lama as if he’s some kind of Tibetan version of Gandhi or Nelson Mandela, but don’t accept it on an emotional impulse without researching it from broader sources (remember, people liek Gandhi or Nelson Mandela were *hated* and demonized in the Western bourgeois press and governments before they were successful).
Michael Parenti has a really brilliant article on the myth of “friendly feudalism” in Tibet:

and theres a youtube thing if you’re lazy:

Read it before you make up your minds on it and follow the ‘free tibet’ crowd.
Criticizing China is an easy political target for people who want to feel like they’re politically progressive but don’t want to be so controversial as to focus on their own governments; and China is a lazy target because criticizing it isn’t controversial as the right-wing and governments in the West (or at least the US and UK) love to go after it. Wanting to boycott the Chinese Olympics because they aren’t letting a bunch of Tibetan exiles come back and rule Tibet as an American proxy state is a bit like wanting to boycott the London Olympics over not letting Sinn Fein govern the north of Ireland or hypothetically boycotting Olympics in America over its treatment of the native Americans or err, occupying Iraq for five years. Which is not to say that those things wouldn’t potentially be legitimate (the Olympics are stupid anyways) but its a double standard to focus on China when the West is both as bad or worse (i mean, how can the British or American governments have any moral authority over Tibet given what they’re doing in Iraq and Afghanistan).
