how could they be allowed to seize a computer in a foreign country???
also something which is criminal inn USA is not in other counties

also, someone being listed criminal in my country because he was catch with a knife not allowded here but legal in USA would be a bit paradoxal

I’m not an expert on US law but from what I read on the official statement the judge can only issue the warrant to the foreign country in accordance with whatever existing agreements exist between that country and USA.

This happens all the time anyway even across countries that are not always seen as “friends” – last year NL and RU cops working together (possibly with Kaspersky) recently busted some lads in both nations involved with spreading ransomware.

The FBI is a national police service, not the NSA or CIA, the way this is reported by some politicians is more chest-beating to try and satisfy Donald Trump supporters.

Currently in Europe if someone does anything (either in real life or online) in one country that is a crime in another the cops and judges can ask for a European Arrest Warrant and the local officers will try and arrest the suspected offender.

Even 10 years ago folk who went to the tekno festivals often fell foul of this as some road traffic laws are stricter in FR and DE and people from UK often ignored traffic violation tickets/fines claiming they didn’t understand the language – only to end up being pulled up by British cops a few months later!

Just the bit about kaspersky really. That firm is excellent and I really struggle to believe it’s under any form of control from the government, unlike almost everything else over there. They do excellent research and have uncovered and documented some of the most sophisticated malware in existence (especially the work done on Flame and Gauss). It’s actually one of the only companies based in Russia in which I have faith. In fact, so much faith I paid a subscruption.

there wasn’t anything bad about it – I got the idea they didn’t do it because politicians asked them or even to sell more software (they gave away the decrypt code) but after law enforcement in at least two European countries had gone through the correct processes to gather evidence and having done so asked them to assist if any victims data could be recovered.

TBH even if Kaspersky are also helping the RU govt keep the infrastructure safe (I think it was their profs who pointed out an insecurity in Moscows traffic light control) I’ve not got a problem with that.

there is plenty in RU going on I do not agree with but much occurs because they had “disruptive innovation” (as yank hipsters like to call it) forced on them from outside 30 years ago rather than being left to peacefully evolve into a modern European country.

As a result its pissed of a lot of lads our age group over there (who are very intelligent but cannot get decent jobs even in comparison to Soviet times) to the point they hate “the West” (or at least some aspects of its culture) even more than 30 years ago. There have always been a few decent tech companies from Russia/USSR who worked with the rest of Europe (even during Cold War era!) although many are little known asd they make obscure bits of equipment (such as all the distribution amplifiers for NTL/VM TV and broadband cable networks in SE England).

TBH nothing you are doing harms USA citizens and even if the feds did try to find you with their poor geolocation software and lack of international awareness they would probably end up searching Belgium instead :laugh_at:
