Let’s start from the beginning. My girlfriend is struggling with panic attacks, and her doctor prescribed her Xanax treatment. At first, it helped her. But now she needs a higher dose to get relief. And I’m afraid that in the near future she’ll become dependent on Xanax. I have read a lot of info about such treatment and I know that a really large percentage of people who take Xanax become addicted to it. The last article I’ve read that tolerance increases, and with it the dose of the drug. This is a pattern. I do not know what to do to help her… maybe you have had the experience of such treatment… is there a more favorable alternative to Xanax?
All benzo type drugs have addictive potential.
Your girlfriends doctor is obliged by ethical guidelines (and quite possibly your country’s laws too) *not* to cause a patient to become addicted to controlled substances as part of their treatment. They should taper off the dose when the panic attacks subside.
If she has any concerns she should talk to the doctor or there should be a patient liaison committee of some sort at your local Health Authority. (for example, she might be concerned the larger dose is affecting her ability to drive safely, or perform well at work/college/University).
